November Throwback: General Hospital’s Casey the Alien Storyline

November is the throwback month, and Friday, November 13 throwback is “General Hospital” Casey the Alien [Bradley Lockerman] storyline. It was perhaps one of the oddest storylines in daytime’s history; it was met with some fan praise due to the wonderful writing. The storyline occurred in 1990 and lasted only three months- a far cry from the 18 months and counting of the Jason Morgan [Billy Miller] storyline.

The storyline opens with Anna [Finola Hughes] being devastated after losing Duke [Ian Buchanan] after he shot Julian [Jason Culp]. Her daughter, Robin [Kimberly McCullough] uses a crystal she recently stumbled upon to help her mother deal with Duke’s loss. The crystal brings the alien, Casey, to appear to Anna in a human form from the planet of Lumina.

Casey had only one mission, and that was to find his crystal and bring it back to his planet. He was concerned that humans on earth would abuse the crystal’s power and would end up hurting themselves. After much searching for the crystal, it is discovered on Spoon Island with the enemy Cesar Faison [Anders Hove]. Faison was using an alias at the time of P. K. Sinclair.

Casey began to get extremely sick because he needed to go ‘home.’ The doctors at the hospital examined him and concluded he was dying of old age. It seemed very confusing that a 30 –year-old male was dying of old age. That’s when Anna and Robin started believing that the cure to Casey’s life lies in the magical crystal. They find the crystal in the hospital cafeteria; they give to Casey, who tells Robin it may be too late. Casey starts glowing blue as he gets energy from the crystal.

Robin convinces her mother that Casey was an alien, and together they search for the crystal so that Casey can return home. The same night that Casey went back to his planet, Lumina, his doppelganger Shep Casey arrives in Port Charles and has a very brief fling with Anna. The storyline was extremely bizarre and made very little sense, but the fans found it to be entertaining. Do you remember the Casey the Alien storyline on “General Hospital”?
