Needed a break to heal
Kirsten took three-months off from General Hospital. She was nervous to return because she wanted her alter-ego, Maxie to be the best she can be. Storms told ABC Soaps In Depth that she needed to take time for herself but started second-guessing herself wondering if she took much time for herself. Thankfully, it all worked out when she returned to the ABC set in June.
The General Hospital actress admitted that, at first, she thought taking three-months off seemed excessive at the time. But now she is happy that she allowed herself so much time. Kirsten said after about a week she thought she was ready to come back, but it was way too soon. After a few weeks, she started to deal with what was going on in her life and allowed herself to process her emotions. The bottom line is she is glad she gave herself three months to get healthy, happy, and emotionally sound!

Opened up to GH fans
Kirsten knew right away that she wanted to open up to her General Hospital fans. Her reason was it would cut down on the rumors and speculation about her temporary exit. Another reason was the soap opera fans are always so supportive and, at that point, she needed all the good thoughts and prayers she could get.
After Storms admitted the reason for her break from General Hospital, it gave her a platform to talk about depression and connect with her fans on an all new level. It helped her feel more normal to hear other women’s stories about battling depression.
Supportive co-stars
Kirsten revealed that Maurice Benard was good about making her feel connected to the GH set. She added that his experience with Bipolar disorder helped connect them in a way she never imagined. She felt that he understood her more than anyone else. Robert Palmer Watkins texted her daily and kept her in the loop with the set and the current storylines. He made her feel needed and missed.
Storms added that taking such a long break was hard for her. For so many years her identity revolved around working and being active on General Hospital. Her depression battle taught her to slow down a little and give herself time to stay mentally strong and healthy.
