The day no one saw coming on EastEnders arrives when Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) quits The Queen Vic pub. I mean, the pub is synonymous with the long-toiling Carter family, and no one is a more enduring fixture than stern and proud matriarch Shirley.
The Carters have been to Hades and back the last few months, even by their hard-living standards. They’ve been awash in financial woes, Mick’s (Danny Dyer) daughter was seriously injured in an accident, their beloved family dog was on death’s door, Mick acted inappropriately with his daughter-in-law, and in the end their fallibility was taken advantage of by their arch enemy Max Branning (Jake Wood). Whew!

But the troubles keep coming round for the beleaguered family, and next week things take a nosedive when a troublesome stranger insinuates herself further into their business.
Fi Browning (Lisa Faulkner) has been overseeing the bar in a management capacity and decides she doesn’t like what she sees. First and foremost, the strong-willed woman takes offense at Shirley and her brusque ways!
Yes, Shirley takes a tipple from the taps every now and again. It’s “her” bar isn’t it? Well, not in Fi’s eyes, and in fact the new manager thinks that Shirley’s very presence is turning away customers tired of her dominating ways. When Fi takes this matter up with Mick she makes it very clear that she wants the poor man to fire his own mom. He might as well go and join the witness protection program if he plans on going through with it!

At first Mick appears to have dodged a bullet when his mother takes the issue out of his hands. It seems that Shirley was been listening to Fi and Mick talk about her, and makes a decision of her own. Mick is shocked when Shirley informs him that she’s quitting. But the drama is far from over as the fierce woman then declares that she has no intention of moving out!
