Zoe Slater was introduced to EastEnders back in 2000 and stayed on the square for five years, True to the slater name the character was surrounded by drama most famously being involved in the dirty den who dunnit, a story line which gripped the entire nation.
Zoe was a very youthful character and brought fresh vibes to the show, which is why her actress Michelle Ryan believes that the role should be brought back to the square but with a different actress. This is not uncommon practice on Soaps, just in EastEnders characters such as Ben Mitchell, Lauren Branning and Bobby Beale have all been replaced. This is mostly due to child actors pursuing different paths but it happens with many adult characters too, a source of great frustration for fans. Many feel that the character changes past the point of return when a new actor or actress is added, changing their dynamic and also creating confusion.
However despite this Michelle Ryan has stated that she wished that the show would consider giving the role to a less well known actress: “Zoe is such a great character and there’s such untapped territory there and there will be some actress out there that’s desperate for that break and I would say give that actress that break because it’s just the best learning curve working there.”
But she also stated that she herself would not take the role if it was offered back to her, “It was my decision to leave, I spent five years there, and I wouldn’t have stayed beyond that time.” Which means sadly for fans the original Zoe will not return, but there may be hope for a recast of the Slater in the future.
As for Michelle Ryan she is currently working on an audio drama for Audible the popular audio book provider, a dramatic retelling of Alien.
