EastEnders Spinoff Redwater Canceled

The BBC is over the Moons regarding its Kat and Alfie: Redwater spinoff. The EastEnders couple had starred in their own series this summer, but now word comes that the loved up pair will not get a second go round. Jessie Wallace, who plays Kat, announced today on the Lorraine show that, “I don’t think there will be another series.”

According to Digital Spy, a BBC exec also confirmed that the original series was a one-off. Instead of recommissioning the unique EastEnders spinoff, the network will instead focus on airing other original dramas.

During the multiple-episode series fans witnessed Kat (Jessie Wallace) and Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) as they left hearth and home in order to find her long-lost son. The search took them to Ireland, and eventually they found the “baby” that Kat was forced to give up after becoming pregnant as a single teen.

Shock of shocks, feisty Kat’s son turned out to be a killer priest! The series featured plenty of dramatic twists and turns and ended with a traditional soapy cliffhanger, with the lives of both Kat and Alfie hanging in the balance. Did Kat survive an accident in the water? Did Alfie survive brain surgery? We may never know, since the series won’t be revived, and there’s no word that the Moons are returning to Walford any time soon.

For her part, Wallace, who’s currently touring in a production of Deathtrap, said she has no idea about Kat’s fate, although she acknowledges missing her character as well as playing opposite Richie. The beautiful brunette noted that she and Richie bonded immediately after meeting up on set. “I don’t miss the show too much when I’m busy,” she said. “But I do miss Kat. I miss getting the scripts. I used to get so many great one-liners.”

Soap viewers understand enough to know that, “never say never,” is a tried and true rule for sudsers. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that we see the mercurial Moons again one day soon.
