Days of Our Lives star Martha Madison is opening up about her mother’s struggle with FTD, or Frontal Temporal Dementia. The actress is best known for her role as Belle Black on the hit daytime television show. And while Martha is not scheduled back on the show until the holiday season, she’s been making the most of her time by working with the AFTD Cure group. She has made it her mission to share her mother’s story with her fans and to help those who are battling with the disease as well.
Martha says that her mother was first diagnosed with FTD back in 1982. And while dealing with her disease hasn’t been easy, she’s never let it get in the way of Martha dreams. Better known as Frontotemporal degeneration, it is a disease that results in progressive damage to the temporal or frontal lobes of the brain. Some symptoms include depression, mood swings and the unwillingness to talk.

She has the heart of a warrior. My pursuit of being an actress was always a joint venture. I remember the day that I booked Days of Our Lives and she was so ecstatic.”

She added, “Because my mom did have MS and a lot of symptoms that she was presenting at the beginning the doctors would just say that she was having an MS attack. But after seven years we were able to find a neurologist that was able to diagnose her with FTD. The one thing I want people to know about FTD is that it exists. It’s there, it’s not going away. We really need people to pay attention to the fact that it is a unique disease.”
