‘Days Of Our Lives’ News: NBC Execs Reveal Odds Of DOOL Cancellation Or Renewal

'Days Of Our Lives' News: NBC Execs Reveal Odds Of DOOL Cancellation Or RenewalWill NBC’s only remaining soap opera, “Days of Our Lives,” be on the air after 2017? Or will Fox News’ incoming star Megyn Kelly replace the 51-year old daytime drama with a show of her own?

New information about the soap’s fate surfaced this week when NBC Chairman Bob Greenblatt addressed the show’s rumored demise. If you’re a betting person, make what you will about the statement he issued at a Television Critics Association meeting regarding DOOL’s future.

Overall Greenblatt delivered somewhat of a mixed message about the sudser’s chances for a renewal after 2017. The chairman told Deadline.com, “We haven’t made decisions, but we like that show.” He stated that the network will have a clearer direction in the next couple of months, but added, “As they age, these shows diminish… you have to keep looking at that.”

The website reported that the odds of renewal past 2017, “are about 60-40 at the moment,” and quoted NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke as saying, “We hope that the show comes back.”

Those aren’t exactly ringing endorsements for the low Nielsen ratings performer produced by Sony TV. It’s been widely reported that DOOL crew and cast members have been told that their jobs are in jeopardy.

Ratings stud Kelly leaves Fox in July. There’s no official word as to when she starts her new gig at NBC, or what type of show she’ll be hosting.

But DOOL is seen in the key 1–2 p.m. timeslot in many markets and it would be the ideal time to air a show with the high-profile, glamorous Kelly.

In 2011, “All My Children,” and, “One Life to Live,” were both sacrificed for now-cancelled talk shows.

In 2012, “General Hospital,” was bumped from its traditional spot in favor of a talk show hosted by Katie Couric. The show lasted two years.

It remains to be seen if DOOL will meet a fate in 2018 similar to so many soaps now off the airwaves.
