Coronation Street Star Gareth Berliner Blasts Airline Over Crohn’s Disease Medication

Coronation Street star Gareth Berliner is making it no secret that he’s not a happy traveler right now. The soap opera star says that Gulf-based Qatar Airways wanted to charge him over $2,400 for the extra baggage he needed to travel with his life-saving medication on a recent flight from London to Sydney.

The actor was first diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at the age of 13. He played Macca on the hit British soap from 2014 to 2016. Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that often causes redness, swelling, and pain.

Gareth took to his Twitter account to blast the airline – which has just been named as one of the best in the world – by saying, “If you have lifesaving medical equipment that you use and need to travel with don’t expect any extra support or help from @qatarairways. Ridiculous and the ask people to send private medical info to an email address in Doha. No direct contact to deal with. #poor.”

When a rep for the airline offered to help by allowing him to bring on 10 additional kilos of baggage, Garth replied with: “I need an extra 45 kilo of weight for medical. You’ve offered 10. Appreciated but will only allow me to live for a week. #eh? A wheelchair grants its user access to life. My fluid – same.”  After going back and forth with Gareth, the airline finally agreed to help him with no extra charge.
