'The Young and the Restless' Spoilers: Move Back To the Fast Lane – Lily and Cane Deserve Deeper Storylines

Lily (Christel Khalil) and Cane (Daniel Goddard) deserve to be involved in deeper storylines on ‘The Young and the Restless’. There’s no denying that ‘Lane’ has played second fiddle to other couples for awhile on Y&R. But new head writer Sally Sussman has an opportunity to create engaging plots for these two solid actors in the near future.

Khalil became Lily in 2002. At that time her mother Drucilla (played by the incomparable and beloved Victoria Rowell) brought her rowdy teenage daughter home from Paris, France. Two years removed from a return to Genoa City, the then 16-year-old Lily was targeted by a mid-20’s guy, Kevin (Greg Rikaart), who eventually transformed his life (for the most part). Lily later learned that Malcom (Shemar Moore), not Neil (Kristoff St. John), was her biological father.

The death of Drucilla remains among the most controversial on- and off-screen issues Y&R has ever worked through. That 2007 event permanently altered Lily’s life. However, during that same year Goddard joined the cast, which changed the trajectory of both actor’s daytime careers. Eventually, Goddard’s character and Lily married and had children.

Cane and Lily became involved after Khalil’s character had a wild romance with and marriage to Daniel Romalotti (Michael Graziadei). Cane’s father Colin (Tristan Rogers) and mother Genevieve (Genie Francis) injected their share of problems into Cane’s life. Of course, Cane was believed to be dead until he reappeared as a purported ghost to Lily. That particular arc was a stretch but was also delightful in a soapy way. Cane’s deranged twin brother Caleb (also played by Goddard) created plenty of trouble. And Cane also pretended to be Jill’s (Jess Walton) son Phillip Chancellor III (Thom Bierdz) for awhile.

Lily’s cancer ordeal was obviously a key moment in ‘Lane’s’ history. It also enabled the storyline where the twins were born through a surrogate. Relatively brief dalliances with Lauren (Tracey Bregman) and Joe (Scott Elrod) afforded Cane and Lily respectively, opportunities to interact with other characters. But those particular storylines also underscored a lessening of meaty scripts being given to Goddard and Khalil in more recent times.

‘Lane’ has a deep history and a faithful following. Each actor’s Y&R resume is replete with stated and unstated instances of demonstrated range. It’s past time for Lily and Cane to be written back into dynamic situations. Here’s hoping that 2017 affords those opportunities.
