‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers: John Abbott’s Visit Can’t Solve Jack’s Main Problem

'The Young and the Restless' Spoilers: John Abbott's Visit Can't Solve Jack's Main ProblemJack Abbott (Peter Bergman) is not like his father on ‘The Young and the Restless’. John Abbott I (Jerry Douglas) arguably held a greater control over his life than his namesake son. While both men faced many problems, John didn’t allow a feud with Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) to consume his soul. So, John can travel across time and space for the rest of Jack’s days. But, all Heavenly visits won’t make a permanent mark if the intended recipient doesn’t follow through on his deceased dad’s advice.

Adults aren’t bullied. They allow others to manipulate them. As Y&R viewers know, Jack has ceded power to Victor for decades. Occasional victories have rung hollow because John, Junior allowed Victor, Senior to get his goat on countless occasions. That pattern has directly lead to a never ending series of squabbles that have consistently thrown Jack off-course.

Last year Jack wisely decided to not play games with Victor anymore. His plan actually proved successful. But, choosing to believe that Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) formed her relationship with Billy (Jason Thompson) because a one-sided truce was called with Victor is ludicrous. Yes, the ‘Moustache’ recruited Marco (Peter Bergman) and that willful act damaged Phyllis’ and Jack’s lives. But, neither Victor nor Marco were or are responsible for how Jack is acting right now. Jack is. He needs to own that response and then take control of himself.

In terms of real life matters: It’s always wonderful to see Douglas’ dapper daytime presence. This fine actor wonderfully portrayed a key character in Genoa City for many years before he was transitioned into a recurring role a handful of years ago. One of the main characters cited above, Billy, was the product of John’s bumpy marriage to Jill (played by the ever-great Jess Walton).

Douglas’ chemistry with Walton was always superb during what are now considered Y&R’s glory days. Of course, glory evokes memories of Gloria. Judith Chapman joined the cast in 2005. Another terrific actor, Chapman’s Gloria character became a pleasing partner for John during the final stage of his life.

It would be nice if John’s spirit visited characters beyond Jack. Imagine how Jill, Billy and Gloria (when Chapman is written back into the script) would respond to seeing John again. But, viewers can’t have everything in this earthly life, or maybe they can?
