Showing Victor (Eric Braeden) as a human being makes sense on ‘The Young and the Restless’. How many times can this character be shown committing some dastardly deed until the Moustache resembles an imitation of himself? New head writer Sally Sussman has strikingly shifted Braeden’s character in a manner that’s very encouraging; creating situations where his shift from antagonist to protagonist naturally fits.
Sussman’s intent, along with the team she’s now leading, is to write Y&R back to character-driven drama. A much clearer focus on beloved characters interacting with each other is expected to play out indefinitely.
Yes, this is still a soap opera. So suspension of disbelief will persist in some measured situations. But fun and hart-warming arcs that inspire are primed to become the norm, rather than continuing to push dark storylines that wide chunks of the hardcore audience find distasteful.
Nick (Joshua Morrow) was surprised that his dad didn’t encourage him to battle Sharon (Sharon Case) in court for stricter custody control of Faith (Alyvia Alyn Lind).
But a refreshed Victor has become far more introspective and philosophical. That’s logical based upon Adam’s (Justin Hartley) recent death and other connected family matters.
In other words, Victor’s response to Nick’s emotional reaction was to suggest a more seasoned action be taken. A wise grandfather would tell his own son exactly what Victor told Nick after Faith temporarily disappeared. How Nick handles this situation, or similar future issues, will also be reflective of changes that Sussman properly imposes.
The barn scene where Victor found Faith covered in hay was outstanding. Viewers surely have individual memories as to how long ago it was that they last saw the great Victor Newman offering that level of compassion to anyone. Lind’s pitch perfect demeanor added to the memorable image of a grandfather consoling his granddaughter. Many viewers were likely able to relate to one, or both characters in those scenes. That’s what daytime drama at its best is often about.
