It’s been a long time since Sharon (Sharon Case) and Nick (Joshua Morrow) were truly together on ‘The Young and the Restless’. During the past year the former super couple has clashed over Sandy (Elizabeth Bogush), reached yet another detente and are now living together (temporarily) in their original house. As fans recall sweet memories about days gone by in Genoa City, the looming Sully storyline also screams to be revealed.
Nick is one of the products of the most famous pairing in Y&R’s history. ‘Niktor’s’ regaled love story created two children, Victoria (currently played by Amelia Heinle) and Nick (the adult version of whom has always been played by Morrow). Vickie has had soul mates through the years, but she doesn’t claim to hold the sibling title for maintaining the deepest romantic connection. No, that honor arguably goes to Nick.
Sharon initially paired with Nick in the mid-1990’s. Smartly aiming at a younger viewing audience, Y&R created that iconic duo and then gave them their own children. But, the most powerful child connection they shared was Cassie (Camryn Grimes), who was Sharon’s daughter from an older relationship with Frank Barritt (Phil Dozois). Cassie’s tragic teenage death was, is and will likely always be the most controversial character write-off that the show made, makes or will ever make.
Grimes full-time return to Y&R three years ago has helped to heal the above-mentioned wound. This talented actor has bridged the gap between her outstanding childhood performances and the creation of an entirely new character, Mariah, who is the twin Sharon never knew she gave birth to until 2013. In 2016, Sharon took this adult daughter into her confidence regarding the boy who isn’t her child, or Mariah’s little brother.
While Y&R’s writers seemingly tease ‘Shick’ to old-school viewers, another pressing matter is screaming for resolution. Yes, the Sully-to-Christian reveal is surely coming. But, as devoted soap fans realize, the timed release of this critical information is crucial. The climax to this arc will create a new chapter in ‘Shick’s’ two-plus decade history. Whether that somehow revives this beloved couple is impossible to know.
