Mariah (Camryn Grimes) was an accessory to a crime on ‘The Young and the Restless’. Whether her actions in the Sully-isn’t-Christian (Jamie and Alister Tobias) arc should result in jail time is a subjective question. But what’s not debatable is that Sharon (Sharon Case) put her daughter in an impossible situation.
The potential of a much different resolution existed when Sharon first confided in Mariah earlier this year. Then the seasons passed and Sharon rejected her daughter’s ongoing pleas to tell the truth to Dylan (Steve Burton) and Nick (Joshua Morrow). Mariah actually covered for her mom on various occasions, which wasn’t good. As modern politicians know, dating back to the days of Watergate, coverups can prove more problematic than the crime itself.

Grimes’ character didn’t actually help Sharon kidnap Christian Newman. Dr. Sandra Anderson (Elizabeth Bogush) committed that premeditated act with the help of a nurse at Genoa City Memorial Hospital. Instead, Mariah aided Sharon in obstructing justice. While she would have betrayed her mother’s trust, Mariah should have gone to the authorities, or at least told Dylan what she learned about Sully’s true paternity. But she didn’t and the facts surrounding her decisions can’t be overlooked.
It was good that Sharon initially confided in Mariah. That appeared to be a breakthrough for someone whose past lies have often led to chaotic consequences for various individuals. But emotionally blackmailing Mariah into remaining silent wasn’t an honest request and therefore didn’t meet the standard of confidentiality. Sharon wasn’t acting in her right mind, irregardless of the fact that she had recently been discharged from a mental health facility in the then-recent past.

Sharon’s subsequently lucid decisions throughout the fall reinforced the point that she was willfully withholding Christian from the man (Nick) who is believed to be his biological father. That was absolutely wrong and illegal. So, the terrible situation that Mariah was placed into by her mother will hopefully be fully reviewed and considered by all involved authorities now that the big reveal has occurred on Y&R.
