‘Phack’ is over on ‘The Young and the Restless’. Jack (Peter Bergman) literally gave Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) a goodbye kiss in the lobby of the Genoa City Athletic Club. Soap opera storylines are notoriously fluid, but this feels like the official end of a terrific two-time super couple.
It’s hard to blame Jack. And, at least he was honest with ‘Red’. He still loves the woman and he genuinely wants her to be happy. However, Jack told Phyllis directly that he doesn’t want to be married to her after locking lips with his now ex-wife one last time.

Phyllis knew for awhile that this endgame was possible. She’s been trudging along in a cramped Jabot office that used to be a storage closet. Her hope was that endurance and proximity would eventually yield ‘Phack 3.0’. Yet, that calculation now appears to have never been possible.
Sally Sussman’s scripts began showing on HD screens across North America this week. Clearly, the opportunity to write both characters in different directions has arrived. It will be interesting to see what becomes of this likeable duo as each partner begins to operate independently.
Together they loved and lost and loved each other again. Post-coma, Tognoni created a softer version of a character Michelle Stafford’s first embodied in the 1990’s. Comparisons between each actor wouldn’t be fair, as Stafford worked for a much longer period on Y&R. This scribe thinks Stafford was one of the more important cast members during the past two-plus decades. He also gives Tognoni high marks for creating her own niche and believes that she’ll continue to deliver solid performances.

As the latter part of the 2010’s begin next month, Bergman’s character is primed to invest in family and do good work with Neil (Kristoff St. John) at the Abbott-Winters foundation. Phyllis appears to be heading to Fenmore’s to work for Lauren (Tracey Bregman), whose company has fallen behind the digital times and needs restoring.
Jack and Phyllis ran for two extended super couple seasons. ‘Red’s’ connection with Nick split them up, but also brought Summer (Hunter King) to life. Now, as 2017 gets set to arrive, memory and occasional flashback scenes will have to satisfy those who were rooting for ‘Phack’ to be revived.
