Michael E. Knight’s pending departure from ‘The Young and the Restless’ was made public last month. His character’s apparently unsuccessful attempt to adjust a perceived miracle drug seems to telegraph Dr. Simon Neville’s exit from Genoa City. However, in the soap world viewers can always hope for a change in plot course, or a future reprieve.
The return of this beloved actor to daytime was cheered by fans of ‘The Young and the Restless’, as well as ‘All My Children’ loyalists. Knight gained fame for his multi-decade run (1983-2011, 2013) as Tad Martin on ABC’s long-running soap opera. His addition to YR’s cast last year deepened Hilary’s (Mishael Morgan) storyline, while also broadening romantic prospects for Ashley (Eileen Davidson).

Dr. Neville’s experimental drug therapy initially enabled Hilary to recover from a coma. His brilliant medical mind also allowed Ashley to apparently neutralize, or defeat, what appeared to be a life-threatening brain tumor. Yes, Simon possesses a halting personality and practices medicine with an unorthodox style. But, there’s no denying that his professional efforts yielded results no one else could fathom, or produce.
Writers enable side characters to develop by inventing new adventures. They can also extend their backstories if so desired. Knight’s screen time was almost exclusively limited to his professional interest in Hilary and his business, slash romantic, tie to Ashley. So, savvy viewers may have guessed that Simon’s growth space was limited prior to last month’s announcement that Knight was being released.

Former executive producer Jill Farren Phelps was let go this spring and Mal Young has since gained the title of Supervising Producer on ‘The Young and the Restless’. So, it’s possible that Knight could regain recurring status in the future if Young sees a place for Simon within Genoa City. However, if that conjecture doesn’t play out, fans are witnessing the final episodes in which this likeable, quirky character, who Ashley often referred to as “Neville”, ends his work in this fictional Wisconsin town.
