Yes, Sally Sussman’s run as head writer of ‘The Young and the Restless’ just began in the fall. Her team’s initial scripts debuted on December 7. But Y&R’s Christmas-themed shows have been knockouts. Only the grinchiest grinches would disagree, or are claiming to not like the shows they’re watching regularly. And if they’re not watching most shows, then how would those uniformed opinions be claimed as expert?
This piece isn’t a defense of all critiques of the two-stage regime that departed earlier this year. And all hardcore, or fleeting fans always retain their rights to offer whatever commentary is deemed necessary. Instead, this feature has been created to express optimism about the revival of many well-liked Genoa City characters.

Sussman’s stated philosophy includes resurrecting character-driven drama that is based on topical stories and centers on legacy personalities. The instant shift to family-related matters within the Abbott and Newman clans has been obvious during the last two weeks. And, as could be seen, the Abbott clan was placed in the last sentence on even footing with the Newman dynasty. Yes, both families matter.
Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) has moved off his neutral Nellie stance that made no sense at all. He was enraged that Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) and Billy (Jason Thompson) betrayed him, but is working through the stages of grief that accompany most divorces. This nuanced breakup, which is mixed with sibling rivalry appears to be establishing three new storyline path’s. One each for Jack, Phyllis and Billy.
Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) rarely places second to his long-time nemesis. But the Moustache’s paragraph came after Mr. Abbott’s. That’s because Victor is being written back to believability. This period of transition isn’t nearly as dramatic as Jack’s erratic responses to ‘Philly’ have been, thus Victor isn’t working in as many juicy scenes. However, Sussman’s team is smartly brightening the one-time ‘Black Knight’.

As for the remainders of both men’s pack’s, their storylines will be forthcoming. And as those arcs develop, fans should expect unnecessary adventures and bizarre situations to remain missing. Soap operas have always worked well and still flow smoothly when the audience is engaged and respected.
Ratings’ maintenance, or possible modest growth is still possible when loyal fans promote what’s happening via social media to their family members, real life friends and various other digital connections. Encouraging signs have been seen by those who enjoy this form of escapist entertainment and aren’t unrealistic about what Y&R is capable of delivering in 2017.
