Ben ‘Stitch’ Rayburn (Sean Carrigan) has a complex history with his wife and with her mother, as viewers of ‘The Young and the Restless’ know. Max’s (Jared Breeze) brain tumor apparently caused him to relentlessly target Abby (Melissa Ordway) and contributed to his role in the death of ‘Stabby’s’ unborn child. But, will factors surrounding Max’s care in a long-term care facility eventually cause Stitch to turn back to Ashley (Eileen Davidson)?
Stitch and his sister Kelly (Cady McClain) were raised in an abusive household. Does anyone in the soapy world ever grow up under normal circumstances? With whatever the answer to that question is, it was eventually revealed that Ben and Kelly’s mother, Maureen (Meredith Baxter), had actually killed her husband, not Stitch, as had been believed. Dr. Rayburn was therefore confirmed as a great guy and had his medical license restored.
The consequences connected to Stitch protecting his mother initially caused his ex-wife Jenna (Stephanie Lemelin) to believe that he was guilty. That perception caused her to move to Australia and deny him access to their child, Max. During that time period in Genoa City, Stitch was first involved with Victoria (Amelia Heinle). When he believed that she was growing closer to Billy (now played by Jason Thompson), Stitch developed feelings for Ashley. That’s the condensed version how ‘Stashley’ was formed on ‘The Young and the Restless’.
Abby despised Stitch at first, not only for his interest in her mother, but also because, like Jenna, she believed he was guilty of murder. But, Abby and Jenna softened over time. Abby’s change of heart enabled Stitch to rebrand as ‘Stabby’. Jenna’s subsequently informed opinion allowed Max time with his father.
Jenna’s untimely death was written so Breeze’s character could gain more screen time on ‘The Young and the Restless’. The backstage choice also established an arc where Max initially appeared to be mad. Max’s eventual diagnosis enabled an understanding of his condition and forgiveness of all crimes. But, needed medical attention and Stitch’s understandable desire to be close to his son has put ‘Stabby’s’ viability in question. And, so a loop back to Ashley can’t be dismissed at this time.
