Some would say that Victor (Eric Braeden) is playing the hero, while Ian Ward (Ray Wise) is clearly the villain on ‘The Young and the Restless’. But, these two characters can easily be compared, rather than contrasted. Perception often rules soapy emotions, similar to scenes that exist in the real world.
Based upon perspective, one could look sideways at someone who has run a rigged business, put Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) through the ringer countless times and exhibited a lack of empathy for the human condition during most of his adult life. So, who was being referenced within that last extended sentence? All three tags could be applied to Victor, or to Ian, thus introducing the rub.
Nikki oscillates between loving Victor and hating him. That’s why they’ve formed, broken and reformed ‘Niktor’ ad infinitum. Only the biased would blame all incarnations of the most famous power couple ever seen on ‘The Young and the Restless’ solely on Victor’s dime. At the same time, few could honestly argue that the great man’s many dalliances, virulent temper and overall demeanor wouldn’t lead the prosecution in a case against him.
Ian was likely born a con man, formed a cult for kicks and remains a cad. His masked charm pushes the word inappropriate over the line every time, while a penchant for mayhem has resulted in more frequent stays in the pen. However, the degree of difference between Ian and Victor is honestly debatable.
While inconsistent in delivery, Victor has demonstrated genuine love for Nikki through the years. Ian’s feelings toward the greatest diva that’s ever existed on ‘The Young and the Restless’ must be classified as an obsession. And, Nikki has never given birth to Ian’s child, or so viewers have been told to-date.
As these two venerable warriors battle each other this summer, YR devotees might be watching with a deeper vision. Yes, there is right and wrong in the world. But, there are also shady characters who intentionally gray the lines. Clearly, Victor Newman and Ian Ward share certain personality traits that can’t be denied.
