‘The Young and The Restless’ POLL: Is The Chemistry Between Phyllis and Billy Believable? VOTE!

“The Young and The Restless” Jack (Peter Bergman) remains in the dark. He doesn’t know that Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) and Billy (Jason Thompson) have been involved for awhile. That’s why Jack’s recent offer for Billy to return to Jabot and work with ‘Red’ could prove explosive. Moving beyond the script, fans of ‘The Young and the Restless’ have been forced to ask if the chemistry between Tognoni and Thompson is believable?

One of the more controversial storyline directions continues to be pushed through the summer. ‘Philly’, the power couple formed by Phyllis and Billy, has elicited mixed reactions from the fan  base. Some believe the Jack and Phyllis make a good couple. Others think that ‘Phack’ is staid and that Jack is old enough to be Phyllis’ father, so Billy is a better age fit. Others point to Billy’s seemingly enduring connection with Victoria (Amelia Heinle). With whatever one’s preference, there’s no doubt that ‘Philly’ has attracted interest.

Billy Miller’s version of Billy Abbott will likely always remain the most revered, as will the manner in which Michelle Stafford played Phyllis when she became the initial image of Phyllis. Tognoni is carving a smoother version of the Phyllis character. For starters, her ‘Red’ isn’t openly vindictive. Thompson’s nuanced version of Billy deserves recognition as well. He’s offering a different interpretation of the frantic character that fans of ‘The Young and the Restless’ have ridden with for years.

It might be worthwhile to view the pairing of Thompson and Tognoni through a modern frame of reference. Yes, Miller and Stafford once embodied the same characters and, at their shared time in the show’s history, it would have seemed impossible for romantic chemistry to have somehow developed between them. But, it’s 2016. Billy and Phyllis, along with the actors who portray them, have changed.

Thompson and Tognoni have been given a different charge by their bosses at ‘The Young and the Restless’. And on that directive, both actors are developing a different fictional reality. Whether enough fans accept each character’s differences and the chemistry that’s been created between them remains debatable.
