Few viewers would claim that Sheila was funny during her stay in Wisconsin. But, she surely knew how to create chaos. Haiduk’s interpretation of Patty mixes humor with pandemonium, creating a likeable anti-hero. Ian Ward (Ray Wise) wasn’t nearly as genial, but he was a riotous partner for Patty to play with during their brief pairing last year.
Haiduk reprised a role that was first embodied by Lilibet Stern in the early 1980’s. Andrea Evans assumed the part after Stern in 1983. Her version of the Patty character was last seen in 1984. ‘Dr. Evil’, aka Victor (Eric Braeden), was later responsible for Patty’s plastic surgery, which enabled Haiduk to join the cast as a veiled Mary Jane Benson in 2009.
The alias Patty assumed was a blend of the first names of her mother and aunt. Victor used this poor soul, who initially aimed her obsession at Phyllis (then played by Michelle Stafford), in yet another revenge plot against Jack (Peter Bergman). That scheme went awry and eventually involved key interactions with Adam (then played by Michael Muhney), who framed Patty, and Colleen (Tammin Sursok), who drowned after being kidnapped by Paul’s (Doug Davidson) sister.
A few years later Patty reappeared as Genevieve Atkinson’s (Genie Francis) maid Myrna Murdock. The character was reprised in that instance as part of an arc that involved Dianne Jenkins (then played by Maura West). Patty was an intentional look-a-like for Dr. Emily Peterson (Haiduk in a dual role), who was another of Jack’s loves.
Most recently, Patty has been central to a storyline that involves Sharon (Sharon Case). Both characters were residents at Fairview’s Mental Health facility last year when a deranged doctor (Sandra Anderson, as played by Elizabeth Bogush) convinced Sharon that she was pregnant and gave her Sage’s (Kelly Sullivan) child. The impending Sully-is-really-Christian reveal appears to have Patty’s fingerprints on upcoming scripts.
Brown’s role as Sheila was transferred to ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ in the mid-1990’s. Though she did return to Y&R in the mid-2000’s to once again torment her nemesis Lauren (Tracey Bregman). Stafford’s dual role portrayal of the Sheila character was very soapy, as the Genoa City terror was purported to have had plastic surgery to look like ‘Red’. That was unbelievable despite the fact that Stafford performed admirably in what apparently was Sheila’s swan song.
