Retaining loyal viewers is key for all serialized shows. Soap operas are particularly reliant on hardcore viewers due to their five-days-a-week, year-round, projection of broadcast content. Young’s smooth start is encouraging and appears to have countered negativity that was directed toward various contested decisions Phelps made.

Speculation combined with heavy social media usage can be a powerful tool to promote positivity. Buzz for popular actors, they characters they play, storylines and shows in general are all helped by upbeat public support. However, a sizable contingent can opt to coagulate around negativity and target an individual, or an entire show. That’s a dangerous rub in the modern daytime drama world.
Soap fans are passionate, which is a positive way of labeling their love for the genre. Segments of soap fans can also choose to connect with social media based groups for the purpose of railing against the so-called ‘system’. That’s partially what happened to Phelps. Some fans felt from the jump that she was a negative influence on the other soap operas she chaired and that she was surely going to poison ‘The Young and the Restless’. Was that idea a self-fulfilling prophecy? All reasonable minds can debate the issue by citing ratings’ history and controversial decisions regarding certain actors.

After his extended BBC success in England, Young appeared as a fresh face on this side of the pond in early 2016. Since he took over, the pacing and frequency of Y&R’s scenes have noticeably changed. Characters are now shown in actual outdoor scenes that aren’t sets, which is refreshingly different. Intriguing musical backdrops have been laid in and between scenes that serve to enhance certain script points, as had been done in the past. A nod to the deep importance of the show’s history has also been evident. All points, among others not mentioned, are clearly giving Y&R a renewed push toward the future. Good taste does have a double meaning in this instance.
