Billy purposefully, rigorously and consistently pursued Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) this year. He knew that she was having problems with Jack (Peter Bergman) and that a percentage of potential remained, however slim, for reconciliation with Vickie (Amelia Heinle). But, what responsibility do the other characters referenced, or others, admit to?

Phyllis naturally wanted her husband to defend her after the Marco Anaselli (Peter Bergman) travesty. Then, Victor (Eric Braeden) merely spent four months in prison for the legal and moral crimes he intentionally committed. And, what exactly did Jack do to defend his wife, other than tell her to forget about it? Billy didn’t have anything to do with all of that.
Jack was kept hostage on an island with Kelly (Cady McClain) while Marco began living in Wisconsin. Jack escaped and returned to Genoa City. Upon arriving, he allowed the woman he loved to believe that seeking justice against the ‘Moustache’ wasn’t best. In reality Jack seemed unwilling to pursue reprisal against Victor because, in part, he was covering his feelings about Phyllis’ perceived betrayal. Again, Billy’s name didn’t appear in this paragraph until now.
Vickie has often said that Billy will never change. But, who lost a daughter under tragic circumstances, her or him? Who’s life was permanently damaged as a result? Who has worn four character faces within less than three years? Yes, Billy. All of that pain (and role changes) didn’t impact Vickie, though Heinle is offered strong praise for being forced to invent chemistry with four male actors. Kudos to you Amelia.

Billy was brought into this world through Jill’s purposeful manipulation of her husband John (Jerry Douglas) ages ago in soap time. When Billy Miller became the adult version of William Abbott, saintly endeavors weren’t written into the script. But, Miller, David Tom, Burgess Jenkins and now, Thompson have all played a character who genuinely cares about his children. And, Billy still feels something for Vickie, despite all of her, yes her, faults, which includes sustaining nearly blind loyalty to Victor.
And, lest viewers forget, Billy didn’t force Phyllis to do anything. She told Billy that she loved him and that her marriage to Jack was over. So, sympathy for Billy can honestly be offered by any Y&R fan. Doing so won’t be a “Mistake”.
