‘The Young and the Restless’ News: 5 ‘Y&R’ Characters That Need A Storyline

Over the few years ‘The Young and the Restless’ writers have ignored several of the soap opera’s main characters. The storylines the actors are now working with are either recycled or non-existent. These are 5 characters on ‘Y&R’ we think deserve a quality storyline.

Neil Winters [Kristoff St. John]

Neil has been involved in more love triangles with either his brother Malcom [Shemar Moore] or his son Devon [Bryton James] than we can count. Neil and Malcom battled over sisters Drucilla [Victoria Rowell] and Olivia [Tonya Lee Williams] and lest we forget Sofia Dupre, Malcom’s former fiancé and mother of Neil’s son Moses Winters. Neil also nearly had an affair with another of Malcom’s fiancées, Alex Perez [Alexia Robinson].

History also shows that Neil planned to marry Victoria Newman [Amelia Heinle] and raise her child with ex-husband Cole Howard [J. Eddie Peck]. Unfortunately Victoria went into premature labor and her baby daughter Eve died shortly after birth.

It’s time to give Neil a love interest and a storyline of his own. Enough shuffling Neil back and forth as a peripheral character. It’s time to put Neil in a position of power at either Newman Enterprises or Jabot. What happened to the jazz club Neil was so excited about owning?

Lily Ashby [Christel Khalil]

There has to be more that Lily can do besides run around Genoa City and the GCAC calling Hilary a no good, money hungry whore. The storyline has gotten old and it’s time for the writers to give Lily – and Cane [Daniel Goddard] a nice juicy story of their own that doesn’t include Hilary and Devon.

Perhaps the writers could bring Daniel Romalotti [last portrayed by Michael Graziadei] back from Georgia with his daughter Lucy. Daniel was Lily’s first real love and the couple weathered a strained relationship with Lily’s parents Neil and Drucilla in order to be together. Since the loss of her best friend Colleen Carlton [Tammin Sursok] and Lily’s battle with ovarian cancer Lily has been sidelined without any anchoring storyline.

Nick Newman [Joshua Morrow]

Nick will always be a pivotal character on ‘The Young and the Restless’ but recycling yet another baby secret is pushing the limits of what ‘Y&R’ viewers will accept. It is fairly predictable what will happen when Nick finds out that Sharon [Sharon Case] and Dylan’s [Steve Burton] son Sully is really Nick’s son Christian.

It’s time for Nick to move out of the tack house on the Newman Ranch and claim his rightful place at Newman Enterprises alongside Victoria. What happened to the young man who stood with his sisters Victoria and Abby [then Marcy Rylan] and sued Victor Newman for $1.5 billion?

Jack Abbott [Peter Bergman]

Jack Abbott the roguish playboy has all but disappeared. These days Jack has been made a cuckold by his wife Phyllis [Gina Tognoni] as she pursues an affair with his brother Billy Abbott [Jason Thompson]. And when did Jack become the man every woman in town can take advantage of when it comes to business? The Jack of old would never let a woman like Hilary run him around in circles. It’s time for Jack to wise up to Phyllis’s affair with Billy and kick her out of his life forever. Is it time to bring back Dr. Emily Peterson [Stacy Haiduk] as a love interest for Jack?

Sharon Newman [Sharon Case]

Sharon’s struggle with bipolar disorder was an opportunity for the writers to bring awareness to mental health issues and remove the stigma attached to them. But Sharon has been portrayed for much too long as a lunatic who has become caught up in an endless circle of changing paternity test results and having babies switched. Why hasn’t Sharon realized how painful it must be for Nick thinking his son is dead? After all, Adam Newman [then Michael Muhney] did the same thing to her when he kidnapped Faith [Alyvia Alyn Lind] and passed the child off as Ashley Abbot [Eileen Davidson] and Victor Newman’s [Eric Braeden] baby girl?

With the firing of ‘Y&R’ executive producer Jill Farren Phelps and the promotion of Mal Young perhaps these major characters will finally be giving some meaty storylines with which to work.
