‘One Life To Live’ News: OLTL Alum Tika Sumpter Stars In New Movie ‘Southside With You’

“One Life to Live” alum, Tika Sumpter (ex- Layla Williamson) stars in the new film “Southside With You.”

The movie chronicles the initial courtship of the future President and First Lady of the United States. During the summer of 1989, Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter) and Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) went on their first dream date. The cast also includes “All My Children” alum, Vanessa Bell Calloway (ex-Yvonne Caldwell) playing Marion Robinson, mother of First Lady Michelle Obama.

The romantic-comedy-drama was written and directed by Richard Tanne. According to Rolling Stone, Tanne said, “The idea was that the movie would not just be about [the Obamas]. It would be about meeting that person who can hold a mirror up to you and show you who you are.”

In addition, to starring in “Southside with You” Tika Sumpter is also one of the producers. “All of Me” singer, John Legend is one of the executive producers.

While sharing photos on Instagram, the actress revealed pride in her involvement in the film, “Southside with You.” Tika Sumpter captioned one photo, “…With no connection to Hollywood she worked endlessly pounding the pavement, while constantly being told no and how she just wasn’t right for the roles she so badly wanted. Discouragement stepped in at times, but in her gut she knew acting was ingrained in her soul. She kept going, and now this. Proud of this film. Proud to be a producer. Proud to say I’m an actor.”

After leaving “One Life to Live,” Tika continued to experience success. She stars as Candace Young on the popular OWN series, Tyler Perry’s The Have and Have Nots. Tika co-starred in the movies Ride Along 2 and Sparkle.

Tika also has exciting baby news. She confirmed to “Entertainment Tonight” that she is pregnant with a baby girl. In addition, Tika Sumpter is an honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

“Southside with You” opens in theaters August 26, 2016.
