Maurice Benard – Benard is always solid as the tough gangster, but his more recent work as Sonny navigated physical disability and his son Morgan’s mental health crisis has been sublime. He’s played vulnerable, angry, guilty and loving as the plot demanded.
Bryan Craig – Craig has never been able to fully flex his acting muscles until the bipolar plot was scripted. He has more than met the challenge as Morgan spiraled out of control, rejected his diagnosis then came to terms with what this meant for the rest of his life.
Jason Thompson – Thompson’s exit left Scrubs fan sad, but at least his work on the way out was splendid particularly his scenes with daughter Emma as she was dealt the blow of losing another replacement mother figure. A satisfying end to a fan favorite character.
Billy Miller – Miller’s introduction as Jason was met with skepticism by many since the mob hitman is integral to so many backstories. But Miller has been stellar as the amnesiac Jake Doe and his disbelief at his identity reveal was mesmerizing. The anger and frustration was palpable.
Laura Wright – Wright has matured into the part of Carly to become a powerful matriarch. Her scenes this year forcing Sonny to let her be at his side while he dealt with his paralysis and her helping both Sonny and Morgan cope with their son’s bipolar diagnosis showed her skills.
Rebecca Herbst – Herbst ably handled the dark turn Liz took in the past year as she stole Jason out from under Sam and tried to rush him to the altar. She played Liz’s rationalization, desperation, guilt, torment and love to perfection and made Liz the character you loved to hate.
Maura West – West is always a standout but her oddly comic turn as Denise DeMuccio was a fun turn after her riveting work as Silas’ deathbed patient. Her begging him to euthanize her then rage when she discovered Silas kidnapped her daughter to save her life was excellent.
Kelly Monaco – Monaco has grown measurably over the years as Sam has evolved. Seeing her true happiness with Patrick crumble to ash at the news that Jason was alive was tragic as were her scenes with Emma when they broke the news that she would not be her mom.
