When we learned that it would be James Franco portraying the role, fans were both surprised and had mixed feelings about it. Franco was revealed to be a serial killer and a sociopath and was promoted as “an artist whose canvas is murder”. When he became obsessed with Jason, TV Guide’s Michael Logan called it an “ongoing man-crush”. James responded that the attraction was that Jason was a master assassin who had murdered a lot of people and gotten away with it. He liked the danger.
Franco terrorized Jason’s family and friends and after Franco implied that he had raped Jason’s wife Sam Morgan (Kelly Monaco), Jason supposedly killed him in January 2012. Franco’s name was mentioned a lot after his death, and for a long time it was believed that Franco was actually Jason’s twin brother.
In May 2013, Franco returned to town with a new actor portraying him, Roger Howarth (Todd, OLTL). His return brought out the truth that Heather Webber (Robin Mattson) and Scott Baldwin (Kin Shriner) were his biological parents. His return was not very welcoming, both Carly and Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) placed hits on him. Sonny canceled his but Carly ordered it and Olivia Falconeri (Lisa LoCicero) was shot instead. * It was later proven that Ava was the one who shot Olivia*
Later in 2013, when Sam was looking for a bone marrow donor for her son Danny, her mother Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) found a beaten and unconscious Franco, and brought him to the hospital. It w as discovered, he had a brain tumor that had been altering his personality for years. They removed the tumor, but due to some cancerous cells he could not be a donor. He found out that Ava Jerome (Maura West) had been lying about Kiki Jerome (then Kristen Alderson) being his daughter.
After the removal of the tumor, Franco seemed to be a new and kinder man. He got a job, as an art therapist, at GH thanks to Dr. Leisl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati) and he began a relationship with sworn enemy, Carly. They planned to marry, but on their wedding day, Franco exposed Sonny as the one who murdered Michael’s (Chad Duell) biological father, AJ Quartermaine (Sean Kanan).
Later, Franco became involved with Nina Clay (Michelle Stafford), and it seemed he had finally found real love. Many fans really enjoyed them together because they both were a little crazy. Things were great until she brought up having a baby. Franco was dead set against having a baby, and abruptly ended things, but somehow developed a deep connection with Jake Spencer, son of none other than Jason Morgan and Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst). Liz and Franco seem to be attracted to each other, but can she truly get past all the things he has done and truly love the man he is?
After 7 years of watching Franco on General Hospital, which actor do you prefer in the role, James Franco or Roger Howarth? Which Franco do you like better, naughty or nice?
