‘General Hospital’ News: Performers Of The Week – “The Corinthos Clan” Laura Wright, Maurice Benard & Bryan Craig

This week I have to give props to the “General Hospital” Corinthos clan. Carly, (Laura Wright) Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Morgan (Bryan Craig) grabbed the spotlight with performances that reflected the fear, concern, uncertainty, denial, and other such messy emotions that are threatening to tear this family apart yet again.

Maurice Benard as Sonny played his anguish over the prospect of his son ending up in an asylum where the walls would close in on him, so perfectly. Clearly projecting his own worst experiences on Morgan’s situation, it was up to Carly, the voice of reason in all of this, to point that out. Then there’s Carly (Laura Wright), forced into the unenviable position of having to admit that she and Sonny are just not equipped to deal with Morgan’s illness at home, and then having to point out all the ways they have failed him in the past. Carly loves her kids with a fierceness that trumps almost everything else in her world, but it never trumps reason when she’s trying to serve their best interests. Sonny had to see for himself just how far off the track Morgan still is before he finally slid over to Carly’s side on it.

Bryan Craig hit it out of the park again on Friday as a very angry Morgan was confronted with the news that there would be no plea deals. We saw happy, hopeful, manic Morgan talking to Andre, so sure that Diane was going to save him, and then, like a switch was flipped, we saw angry, hateful, desperate Morgan raging against his reality, spewing hate at Diane, Andre, Sonny, and Carly. As if all of this wasn’t good enough, we ended the week with a very remorseful, very tender, caring, and selfless Morgan in his scenes with Kiki. It was genuinely a rollercoaster ride of mixed raw emotions on Friday and nothing about any of it felt unreal or forced!

Just give Bryan that Emmy now!

A shout-out to Roger Howarth too. Another great series of mini-performances that moved me a couple of different ways. The scenes with Kiki were fabulous. Though he isn’t her father, his caring concern for her hits paternal levels that feel genuine. His interaction with Jake is priceless. Franco so obviously wants/needs to keep Jake from becoming all the things that Franco used to be, and he’s willing to go out of his way to make that happen. It’s fun watching a friendship develop between him and Liz too. Howarth is greatly under-utilized. It’s time for the powers that be to realize this and give him a storyline that puts him front and center again, but not in a dangerous, maniacal kind of way.

Who’s with me on that?!

Until next week!
