‘General Hospital’ News: Performer Of The Week – Finola Hughes

Another week of excellent spotlight performances and the hard task of choosing just one. So, who stood out most to me this week?

The multi-talented, gorgeous Finola Hughes! How wonderful to see Anna involved in a storyline with some bite for a change! Going up against Paul Hornsby (Richard Burgi) in a delicious game of cat and mouse, we get to see that side of Anna that’s been missing for far too long. Sill working to avenge Duke’s death, Anna has spent a lot of her time lately trying to take down Paul because of his association with Carlos Rivera, the man she holds responsible for Duke’s shooting, and in turn, Julian Jerome, the man who ordered the hit.

It was entertaining when she was in the shadows, but when circumstances changed and she had to start making nice with Paul, things got really interesting! Having to push her hatred of him down and buddy up to him is something only an agent of Anna’s caliber could pull off. Friday’s twist makes it all the more interesting because now Anna has to put some trust in him on the off-chance that he’s genuinely telling the truth about his involvement with the arms shipments moving through Port Chuck. They are still very much on opposite sides but for the next few moments, they need to be a team.

What will Anna do with her knowledge now that Paul has confessed to the murder of Kyle Sloan? Paul is right when he says that he still has her for the 4 bullets she pumped into Rivera, but he’s not actually dead. Sloan is and the cover-up is really messy! Anna would ultimately get off a lot lighter than Paul would, but she’s not thinking in those terms. She’s willing to go to prison if it means bringing down Julian Jerome and that makes her very dangerous to Paul.

Finola Hughes is at her brilliant best when she’s playing Anna Devane: Super Spy! I must say though that in the scene this week when she got the text from Mac about Susan, and Paul grabbed her arm as she was leaving the room, I really expected her to knee him in the dangly bits, karate chop him for good measure, maybe roundhouse kick him in the throat, and then perhaps pistol-whip him just for fun. 80’s Anna would have done that.

It’s been a very busy week in Port Charles and next week promises to be even better as some of these storylines come to a head. Stay tuned!
