‘Empire’ Spoilers: Exec Producer Ilene Chaiken Dishes On Season 3 – Freda Gratz Returns

Empire Season 2 may have come to a close, but that doesn’t mean the fans aren’t already talking about what’s ahead next on the hit prime time drama. The executive producer, Ilene Chaiken sat down with TV Line and gave a few tidbits on the new season. “Freda will be in Season 3. She is part of our story. It’s not over,” Ilene confirmed.

If you recall, Freda Gatz (Bre-Z) was arrested after she accidentally shot Jamal (Jussie Smollett) with a bullet that had Lucious’ (Terrence Howard) name on it.

It isn’t apparent what the fallout may be for Freda for the accidental shooting of Jamal, and how Lucious will react when he learns he was supposed to be the one gunned down.

Jamal and Freda developed a genuine friendship and began to understand why she behaves the way she did to certain situations. He came to the conclusion that Freda is misunderstood by many people, and tries to smooth things over [for her]. In Season 3, Freda and Jamal will have “fun, light-hearted, and sincerely endearing moments.”

“Jamal understands that she is a victim, but he has to deal with the fact she shot him, no matter the circumstances. It was a traumatizing event that she perpetrated on him. Ultimately, he believes in her and the belief that they have to end the abusive cycle, now,” Chaiken disclosed.

Ilene revealed that Jamal will be a big part of Season 3 which debunked the rumor that the character would exit after Season 2. Even further, the EP explained that Jamal would be a focal point in Season 3.

Apparently, Jamal will come out of the hospital after being shot, not fully recovered and begins to struggle with the psychological effects of such a life-threatening event. Jamal will explore a romance with D-Major (Tobias Truvillion) moving into Season 3, and they face significant obstacles if they want to make their relationship work long term.
