‘Days of Our Lives’ Interview: Thaao Penghlis Talks Saying Goodbye To Joseph Mascolo – Discusses ‘DOOL’ Co-Star’s Health-Related Departure

Even though “Days of Our Lives” fans were prepared for Stefano DiMera’s [Joseph Mascolo] demise, that didn’t make it any easier to say goodbye. Thaao Penghlis [Andre DiMera] was interviewed recently by Michael Fairman and revealed his thoughts regarding Mascolo’s health-related departure.

Thaao and Joseph worked together off-and-on for decades as the devious father and son Stefano and Andre DiMera. How difficult was it for Penghlis when Mascolo filmed his last “DAYS” scenes? The actor revealed in the interview with On-Air On-Soaps the cast and crew threw a semi-retirement party for Joseph – you never know when Stefano’s ghost will turn up.

Penghlis joined the party later in the day after wrapping up shooting his scenes earlier in the day. He revealed that Joseph was having a good time and taking pictures with everyone – and there was cake, of course! However, Thaao revealed, “I don’t think the realization had hit him yet that life as it was as Stefano has expired.” Later on, it did, and Penghlis recounts that his friend and co-star turned to him and asked, “Does that mean it’s over?”

The most difficult thing for Thaao to deal with wasn’t Joseph’s departure because they will always keep in contact and be friends. Penghlis was shocked by the insensitivity of “DOOL” fans on social media and how quick they were to judge when they didn’t have all the facts. The actor divulged that “DAYS” fans became extremely negative and it was not easy to keep quiet regarding the truth about Joseph’s health.

“Occasionally there was a smart person who said, “I think there is something wrong with the actor,” Thaao stated. The ordinarily calm actor revealed, “You just read those comments, you just want to reach out and slap them.”
It’s quite obvious that Thaao Penghlis and Joseph Mascolo have a special bond. In fact, Thaao has taken over Joseph’s dressing room! But the actor says Mascolo’s presence is still there, it’s not easy to shake such a powerful and iconic character like Stefano DiMera.
