‘The Young And The Restless’ News: Peter Bergman, Tristan Rogers, Michael E. Knight Remember Their First Soap Opera Digest Covers

Soap Opera Digest turns 40 years old, and soap actors dished about the first time they saw themselves on the cover of the national magazine. For many stars, appearing on the cover was a reminder that they made it and achieved their initial dreams. For others, it was a personal goal to grace the cover of a magazine, they would be faithful read- only dreaming about being on the cover. Below are a few of “The Young and the Restless” actors’ comments about their first time seeing themselves on the magazine front cover.

Peter Bergman recalls the first time he was on the cover [ August 19, 1980], and it wasn’t the fondest memory for him. He was 27- years-old and portrayed Cliff on “AMC.” He was pictured with Taylor Miller [ex-Nina] Nina] and remembered she looked beautiful. He explained, “Soap Opera Digest was and still is the pre- eminent magazine. I was 27 years old and pictured with Taylor Miller, who, by the way, photographs like a dream. I’ve had MANY covers since then, but this one is my least favorite. It was a different time and soap, and times were very different than today. I just wanted to work and not worry about looking pretty. I have perfected what I could do with this limited face. I know a lot of people who looked a lot better than I did at that age, I’m sorta grateful that wasn’t the case for me. There were MANY years that Soap Opera Digest was incredibly valuable to me, and contributed to my success.”

Michael E. Knight explains that being on the cover [July 3, 1984] of Soap Opera Digest is a rite of passage for a daytime actor. He said, “Getting your first Digest cover is a rite of passage. Back in the days, there were 14 soaps on air, so getting on a cover was a big freaking deal. As a 25-year-old guy, it was like the feather in the cap to be selected. Even when I see the cover today, 30 years later, I feel a sense of wonder, excitement and almost childlike happiness. 

Tristan Rogers remembers his first cover [November 24. 1981] of Soap Opera Digest and said it brought back happy memories. He recalled, “Looking back at it now reminds me of a different time, a better time. The soaps were hot then, and it was great to be a part of it. Back then, I got over 6,000 fan letters a week, and I had to employ someone just to handle my fan mail.”
