Iconic soap heartthrob of the 1980s, Frank Runyeon, will be returning to daytime television. The former As The World Turns star will be playing an angel named, Angel, how original, on CBS’ The Young and the Restless. Many details are still unknown, as CBS is keeping everything pretty quiet for the time being, but fans will not have to wait long to find out. Runyeon is scheduled to appear on May 28, and again on June 2.
As far as playing an angel, Runyeon will be used to playing a divine part. In the past, Frank played a priest on Santa Barbara and a priest on Melrose Place. He is also on tour doing a one man show based on the scripture. Runyeon spoke with TV Insider about his latest venture. He says, “I do the Gospel of Mark, Matthew, Luke, John, all of them. Before I went into acting I was a religion major, so the spiritual has always been there in my life and my work…”
When asked about playing getting the job, and playing an angel, Runyeon said this; “…they were looking for a guy who looks sort of Biblical and Chuck[Pratt] thought of me.” Chuck Pratt is one of the head writers for The Young and the Restless. Before his job at Y&R, Pratt worked on Santa Barbar as a writer, which is where he and Frank Runyeon first met. When Pratt was casting for the role of an angel, he immediately thought of Frank.
“I mean, who else is so stupid they’ll walk around with a beard and long hair looking for a job in Hollywood? Me! I’m that stupid! And it’s such an interesting thing to play an angel. I mean how do you do that exactly? There are no rules, so I just so to winged it. Hey, if Brian Frons could play God on Santa Barbara, I can certainly do this,” Runyeon tells TV Insider.
Until we hear more from CBS, we can only suspect that perhaps another Genoa City resident is going to die soon, and encounter “Angel,” after their death. It will be interesting to see Frank Runyeon bring an angel to life, and even more interesting to see how they implement his character on the show.
What do you think? Will Genoa City lose another resident? Is someone going to have a breakdown that only a divine intervention can put back together? Let us know in the comments below.
