‘The Young And The Restless’ Interview: Melody Thomas Scott Discusses 37 Years On Soap As Nikki Newman, Family, And Dream Storyline

“The Young and the Restless” mega star, Melody Thomas Scott [Nikki Newman] sat down with Soap Opera Digest to talk about her magazine covers, her daughter, her dream storyline for Nikki, and how she celebrated her 40th birthday. She also explained how special it was that she has been on the show since 1979.

Melody explained that her publicist had suggested she framed some of her magazine covers and hung them on her dressing room. “It took me a long time to get them out and framed. I had a nagging feeling this type of display would send the wrong message- that my ego was out of balance. I still feel that way to be honest. It is something that people seem to enjoy seeing. New guest walk in and actually squeal in excitement commenting on each storyline going back to 1979.”

Melody’s daughter, Elizabeth graced the cover of Soap Opera Digest in 1989. She was asked how Elizabeth feels about being on the cover as an infant. “I think she would have rather not been on that cover. However, it was 25 years ago, so I think the danger of being on the cover is well over,” Melody laughed.

Thomas also expressed gratitude for being a part of “The Young and the Restless” for 37 years. She said being part of the legacy and core characters is nothing short of a blessing. “As an actor, there’s no other way to explain the rarity of reaching such heights, except we are extremely blessed. Bill and Lee Bell will forever be our angels.“

As for where she’d like to see Nikki go next, Scott added, “I’ve always wanted Nikki to go stark raving mad in a rubber room! As an actor, that would be a great fun to play. Lord knows Nikki had a reason to crack after everything Victor [Eric Braeden] has put her through over the years!”

Melody was asked about her legendary 40th birthday party and asked if it was as big as the reports made it seem. She explained, “My husband threw me a HUGE surprise birthday party! Two hundred and Fifty of our closest friends, family members and favorite people came to celebrate with me. It was great fun, and I will never forget it.”
