Soap Masterpieces November Throwbacks: Y&R’s Billy Miller and Michael Muhney Final Scenes

Billy Abbott [portrayed by Billy Miller] and Adam Newman [portrayed by Michael Muhney] delivered one of the most emotional scenes ever filmed next to Cassie Newman’s [Camryn Grimes] death. Billy was hurting after learning that Adam Newman was the one who killed his daughter, Delia [Sophie Pollono].

The scene opens with Adam and Billy in Delia’s memorial site. Billy was overwhelmed with anger and was holding Adam at gunpoint on that cold snowy night. Adam questions Billy, he is entitled to ask a few questions, after all; he answered all his questions. Billy says, “TELL ME what questions YOU think you are entitled to?” He pointed a gun to Adam.

Adam begs him not to kill him, “Billy don’t do this. I have a son. My boy, Connor doesn’t deserve this.” Billy starts crying and says, “I HAD a daughter. Oh My God, I HAD A DAUGHTER; she is buried just over there.” He motioned to her memorial site with the gun.

Adam began to tell him that many times in past few months, he has considered killing himself. He tried to have a life with his family. He tried to forget what had happened, but it was always there, haunting his every move.”

Billy tells him he doesn’t believe him. Adam tells him he is sorry, and that it is a terrible tragic accident. Billy says, “I brought you here because this was the place I told my daughter everything was going to be okay. I held her hand as her life slipped away. You caused this and now it will cost you time with your family.”

Adam started feeling nervous as he begged Billy to take him to the police station to turn himself in. Billy tells him that is not good enough, he needs more. “I thought to be in the very spot that my daughter died and hearing you confess; I’d feel better, but I don’t. In fact, I feel worse. It will never be enough. It’s not fair; you get to live when she is dead.”

“Billy I didn’t know she was there. I never saw her. You have to believe me, “Adam said. He shook his head in disbelief. “LOOK at me, Billy. I am telling you- I didn’t know,” Adam cried. Billy forced Adam back into the car to drive somewhere else. Adam tries to convince him to go to the police station, but he wouldn’t budge, demanded he drove without questioning thier destination.

While, in the car, Adam tells Billy, he can put the gun aside- he’s cooperating, and the gun makes him nervous. Billy refused to put it away, stating he needs it for enforcement. They almost get in an accident, and Billy goes on a tirade that Adam was trying to get in an accident to escape his revenge plan.

They arrive at Delia’s school and Billy talks about how she was excited about her performance in the school play on that night. Billy tells him, “You say you have nightmares about my daughter, about that night. Don’t. Remember her in that school play, on the happiest day of her life. It didn’t take much to make Delia happy, but that night she was on cloud nine.”

Chelsea [Melisa Claire Egan] calls Adam, and he answers quickly. She says,” Adam I saw the tape. I understand why you have been drowning in guilt. What happened that night with Delia was just an awful, terrible, terrible accident. I still love you and will be here for you no matter what. We are still a family. Just come home. Adam, you hear me- come home.” At this point, Adam has broken down crying, knowing he will never see and touch his wife again.

Billy tells him all his loved ones- Victor [Eric Braeden], Avery [Jessica Collins], Jack [Peter Bergman], and Sharon [Sharon Case] would not understand how he could leave a child on the side of the road. He tells him to drive North, and he will let him know when to stop.

Adam asks him what is the purpose of this joy ride. He tells him that he wants everyone to know what he did and the kind of person he has become. He tells him he will spend his life in prison, “When you get out of prison, you will be an old man. Your family will have moved on without you,” Billy stated.

“All those people you care about, they will eventually band together to keep Connor safe from the likes of you, Billy said. “I have one goal, one solid goal and that’s to make sure you never see Connor again,” Billy continued.

Adam defends himself for the first time in the clip, “It’s a case of misplaced anger. You want to blame me for everything. What was a little girl doing alone in that car? Was that my fault? Oh no, Billy- that’s all on you.” Adam implied they shared the guilt for her death. Billy wasn’t ready to take on ANY of the guilt. Suddenly, Billy makes a sudden move with the gun, and Adam tries to grab it. They struggle for the gun when it goes off- Adam is shot, and the car spins out of control into the river.

This scene is even more special when you consider how far both Billy and Adam have come since this scene. Billy can take some of the guilt, and Adam was brave in admitting his part in her death. It’s a heart-breaking scene watching Billy struggle so much with her death. Do you remember this scene?
