One of the hallmarks of our favorite soap operas is when they hit us with tear jerker storylines. And General Hospital is a master of manipulating our emotion. Whether it’s the breakup of a favorite couple or, heaven forbid, the death of a legacy character, we are always heartbroken. But when it’s the death of a child, it’s particularly devastating and, over the years, GH has hit us hard with a number of tragic storylines of the loss of babies, children and young adults that have been utterly depressing.
Which of General Hospital’s baby, child and teen tragedies do you feel is the worst? Read the summaries below, then vote at the poll at the bottom…
Rafe Kovich Jr (August 8, 2014)
Stephen Clay/Caleb Morley and Alison Barrington, both characters from GH spin-off Port Charles, were the parents of Rafe Kovich Jr (Jimmy Deshler). Poor Rafe. His dad killed his mom, Rafe went into foster care and ended up on drugs. Then he got involved with Victor Cassadine who forced him to run Sabrina Santiago (Teresa Castillo) and Patrick Drake (Jason Thompson) off the road. He later fled the police and was himself injured in a car accident then died after going brain dead after neurosurgery.
Gabriel Santiago (June 5, 2014)
The premature son of Sabrina and Patrick lived less than six weeks. The poor little tyke was born at the side of the road after Sabrina, Patrick and Emma Drake (Brooklyn Rae Silzer) were in the car accident caused by Rafe. This accident ended up taking two lives – first Gabriel then Rafe. Little Gabriel was born at just 25 weeks and only had a 50/50 chance at survival. He was on a ventilator and improving then an infection shut his organs down. After Sabrina had Gabriel baptized, he died in her arms.
Jake Spencer (March 22, 2011)
Although little Jake Spencer (James Nigbor) was recently resurrected, that doesn’t erase our sorrow that we felt when he supposedly died four years ago. It was horrible watching three parents lose him: Jason Morgan (then Steve Burton), Liz Webber (Rebecca Herbst) and Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson). There was also the horror that Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) went through thinking he killed his grandson. Fans were understandably outraged at this one and the show may be trying to correct it now.
Georgie Jones (December 17, 2007)
As the counterweight to her scheming sister Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms), Georgie Jones (Lindze Letherman) was always a good girl. Georgie was protective of Maxie and worried that her sister would fall victim to the Port Charles text message killer. Maxie barely escaped after the TMK tried to strangle her and Georgie was so focused on Maxie that she didn’t realize the TMK was coming for her until it was too late. This broke Damien Spinelli’s (Bradford Anderson) heart and ours too.
Stone Cates (September 29, 2010)
Even before Stone Cates (Michael Sutton) passed away as a result of AIDS, his life was tragic. Stone contracted HIV from a former girlfriend who had been a drug addict. Stone then infected Robin Scorpio (Kimberly McCullough) before he knew he was HIV positive and was devastated when he found out that he had spread his sickness to her. Although his death was terribly sad for all of us to watch, it sparked an incredible dialog about HIV and AIDS that helped bring it to the main stream.

BJ Jones was definitely the saddest. I’m surprised she did not make your list.
Also, Stone never knew he infected a Robin. She told him him her test came back negative.
Enjoyed your walk down memory lane though!
what about BJ?
Sorry but Patrick’s son birth or Rafe stories were not heartfelt but a plot point stories and don’t fit as heaheartfheartfelt. They don’t fit with ANY of the other stories mentioned. The mother of the Patrick’s baby couldn’t even let a tear out which speaks volumes. Rafe is another one that doesn’t compare. Where is BJ’s deathh. That certainly belongs on this list over Rafe and Patrick’s son.
Stone, it’s not even close. Rafe and Gabriel hardly had any thought put into them as Cathy said. Also like Cathy said, where is BJ’s death?
Georgie would be my second pick of the ones listed
Gabe’s death was very heartfelt, I don’t know what you people are talking about. Everyone grieves in a different way, she showed plenty of grief. That was so sad, her, Patrick, & even Emma too! I would say Georgie second, still can’t believe they killed her off.
