When ‘General Hospital’ spoilers revealed that Laura Spencer [Genie Francis] was coming back as part of Luke Spencer’s [Anthony Geary] final exit, we assumed Laura might ride off into the sunset with her former hubby.
Then ‘General Hospital’ news broke that Genie Frances inked a three-year deal with the ABC soap and we here at Soap Opera Spy are excited. We love our legacy characters and Laura has been beloved by GH fans for more than 30 years.
Here’s 7 reasons we’re thrilled with Genie Francis’ lengthy contract:
#1 Laura can be the matriarch
Laura has always been such a nice lady, even when life has done her wrong. It’s nice to see her now with some steel in her spine as she’s standing up to Hayden Barnes [Rebecca Budig] and calling her out on scamming Nikolas Cassadine [Tyler Christopher]. With Helena Cassadine [Constance Towers] dead, Laura can serve as matriarch of the Cassadine and Spencer clans (even though she’s neither by birth).
#2 Laura can look for love
Luke always ruined any other chance Laura had at love including her past marriages with Scotty Baldwin [Kin Shriner] and Stefan Cassadine [Stephen Nichols]. Laura deserves a love with someone who won’t run out of town at a moment’s notice, cheat on her, and drive her insane. Maybe she can give Scotty another chance – he’s always loved her and he’s single now too…
#3 Laura can pursue a career
Laura is floating around Wyndemere a bit aimlessly right now – she needs a job. ELQ would be a good place for her, except it looks like Nikolas will lose it soon. Why not put Laura over at Crimson with Nina Clay [Michelle Stafford] and Maxie Jones [Kirsten Storms]? Laura was the boss at Deception Cosmetics back in the day and she can help the Crimson gals deal with Julian Jerome [William deVry].
#4 Laura can help Liz
Aside from work and love, Laura needs to get her relatives in gear. Liz Webber [Rebecca Herbst] will be devastated after Jason Morgan [Billy Miller] walks out on her for good (at least for now) and Laura can console her. Laura can dry her tears, encourage Liz to think about her kids and pull it together without saying “I told you so” even though Laura did tell her so on several occasions.
#5 Laura can help little Jake
No one has addressed the shaky mental state of poor little Jake Spencer [James Nigbor]. Laura encouraged Liz to get him some help and Liz snapped at her, but it may soon become obvious that the kid needs therapy. Laura can sympathize with Jake since she’s been kidnapped and held on Cassadine Island herself – perhaps she’ll be the one to get him to talk about his experience there.
#6 Laura can deal with Nikolas
Nikolas has some major consequences coming his way – for stealing ELQ, lying about Jake’s identity, trying to have Hayden killed, and for possibly knowing where Robin Scorpio [Kimberly McCullough] has been all this time. When it all comes crumbling down around him, Nikolas will need his mommy. And no matter how evil he’s been, Laura will still show him love.
#7 Laura can help Lulu
Another of Laura’s kids is struggling now – Lulu Spencer [Emme Rylan]. Laura has been giving her solid advice for how to deal with Dante Falconeri’s [Dominic Zamprogna] infidelity but Lulu has been acting out when things don’t go the way she hopes. With Lulu now plotting with Johnny Zacchara [Brandon Barash, she may be ruining any hopes of a reconciliation and needs her mom.
Let’s face it, there’s so much Spencer and Cassadine-adjacent drama going on right now that Laura could stay busy rotating through the Haunted Star, Wyndemere and Liz’s place. But let’s hope Jean Passanante and Shelly Altman have a higher calling for Laura now that she’s here to stay!

Knowing, Laura she will continue to help her children!! I also think she will find her a job, fall in love, and maybe get her another house!!
I wonder why they didn’t bring back Laura on contract during the last years that Luke was on the show. Do they not get along or something?
