‘General Hospital’ – 5 Reasons We Want to See More of the Port Charles Kids

‘General Hospital’ new head cowriters Jean Passanante and Shelly Altman announced a few changes when they took the helm of GH and these included more romance and less of the kids. Their new material started in October and they have been true to their word.

With a large ensemble show, it’s clear that more time with the kids means less time with the adult characters, but we miss the junior cast of Port Charles. Here’s five reasons we want more of the ‘General Hospital’ kids in storylines.

#1 Brooklyn Rae Silzer is Amazing

Kudos to the casting department because the kids cast on GH can really act – and Brooklyn Rae Silzer deserves an Emmy ASAP. Emma Drake’s sad scenes as part of the breakup of Patrick Drake [Jason Thompson] and Sam Morgan [Kelly Monaco] was riveting.

Her distress was real and tear-inducing to those watching. How can you not want more of that? With Thompson leaving GH, will we lose screen time with Emma? Hope not! Maybe Patrick can leave Emma with Anna Devane [Finola Hughes].

#2 Little Jake Spencer Needs Work

It’s incredible that James Nigbor could come back to GH and has turned into a fine (and scary) young actor. He doesn’t even have to speak to put chills down our spine. There’s so much story there to be explored. Why hasn’t his mom taken him to a shrink?

Why is no one concerned about his dirty looks and occasional violence? With Liz Webber [Rebecca Herbst] and Jason Morgan [Billy Miller] splitting, it seems like a perfect time to dig deeper into little Jake’s backstory and get him some therapy.

#3 Josslyn Jacks SORA

When Eden McCoy was cast to replace Hannah Nordberg, Josslyn’s age jumped several years and this was the second age jump for that kid. This places her at odds with the other kids’ ages. We’re hoping the rest of the 9-11 year olds won’t also be SORAd.

Will they bring in a new teen actor for a possible Josslyn romance? Since the SORA happened, let’s hope it has purpose. Josslyn was reintroduced at her mom’s wedding then we haven’t seen much of her. Bring her back and give her a story!

#4 Missing the Mini-Romances

Of course the show is all about the love interests of Port Charles’ grown-ups but the mini-romance dramas were fun to watch. Seeing Spencer Cassadine (Nicolas Bechtel) fight for the love of Emma with Cameron Spencer (Michael Leone).

Cameron’s casual arson at Wyndemere “sparked” drama then a burned Spencer went all Phantom of the Opera. These mini-drama can still play out without taking up too much screen time. More, please!

#5 Unresolved Issues

There are a number of issues left hanging with all the kids. Whose kidney does Josslyn have? Will little Jake’s pattern of violence continue and what was done to him on Cassadine Island? Are Nicolas and Cameron over Emma? Will Cameron continue to be a firebug?

How are all the grown up breakups affecting the kids? Will Jake and Danny continue to bond as brothers? Will the kids continue to be props or will they get some storyline? Will the writers ease up on the no-kids concept?

At the time Passanante and Altman made the “less kids” announcement, it seemed to make sense as views were frustrated with the slow burn of Jake Doe’s reveal and other storylines that were creeping at a snail’s pace.

But it seems like they can make room for the occasional plot involving the kids. ‘General Hospital’ spoilers reveal that Patrick will take Emma to Paris in coming days as part of his exit storyline, but will she have more story when she comes home?
