‘Days Of Our Lives’ Interview: Kate Mansi Discusses Auditioning For ‘DOOL,’ Favorite Abigail Deveraux Storylines, And Affair With EJ DiMera

“Days of Our Lives” star, Kate Mansi sat down with Glamour for a candid interview about her fascinating audition, her favorite storylines, and the length she went to be the perfect Abigail. Kate Mansi took Abigail Deveraux from a ‘blah’ character to a fan favorite in just five years. Kate has shown her well-rounded talent in every scene that she has been a part of throughout the years.

Kate explained that before she went off to college, she originally auditioned for the character, Melanie Jonas. The producers praised her acting ability, but she didn’t get the part. She went back to school, and her agent called her again for another callback to do a screen test with Casey Deidrick. The screen test went well, but TPTB decided not to go ahead with the character. Kate told her agent, she would not audition for “DAYS” ever again. Kate went back to college, graduated, and landed the role of Abigail—all within a matter of weeks.

The biggest challenge Kate faced, at first, was her hair color. Her agent told her when she came in to talk to the writing team, arrive with blonde hair. Kate laughed and said that it wasn’t easy. She is an Italian woman with dark roots. She wanted the part, so she dyed her hair—and she walked on “DAYS” with a year contract right away.

The night before her meeting with “DAYS” her boyfriend of five years broke up with her. She completely changed her look. It was all too much for the 21-year-old actress. Kate remembers something her mother told her on that stressful night. She said, “Katie, tomorrow your life is going to change. You dropped all your bad luck baggage. It was all supposed to be this way.”

Kate remembers her first scene was with Missy Reeve and Shawn Christian; Abby comes home for a surprise visit to find out her mother had heart surgery and was lucky to be alive. She was supposed to hug Daniel for saving her mom’s life. Apparently, Kate embraced Shawn too long, because the producer pulled her aside and asked her to have LESS chemistry with her mother’s boyfriend.

Mansi explained the storyline she liked the least and best was the same one. She said when she came in between Sami [Alison Sweeney] and E.J. [James Scott], it was a HUGE storyline for her. One of her fears from the storyline was the fan backlash from tearing apart the fan the favorite couple—Sami and E.J.

Kate was asked felt she was like Abby in any way. Kate explained she is most like her to a point. “I am organized like Abby, and I tend to take myself a little too seriously. I have to be reminded to stop working, have fun, and I am a sucker for love. Abby and I both are extremely loyal to our family,” Kate Mansi said.
