“Days of Our Lives” co-executive producer Greg Meng gathered hundreds of photos from the rich and storied history of “DOOL” and created a 50th anniversary book paying tribute to all those who have passed though the sets of the NBC daytime drama.
“Days of Our Lives 50 Years” was published in October 2015. Book Trib recently interviewed Greg about “DOOL” history, what themes did the producer and author have in mind when he began the creative process, and what he knew must be included in the “DOOL” 50th anniversary book.
The co-executive producers explained to Book Trib that the mid-1980s were a very important era for supercouples – and “DAYS” became famous for the incredible characters the writers were able to put together to contribute to this phenomenon. Meng talked about Doug and Julie Williams [Bill Hayes and Susan Seaforth Hayes]. Bill and Susan met on the set of “DAYS” – they were not meant to be permanent characters. The couple fell in love on-and-off screen. Bill and Susan were married in front of 16 people in their living room. Doug and Julie were married in front of 16 million viewers!
Other supercouples who are a big part of the “DOOL” 50th anniversary book are John Black [Drake Hogestyn] and Marlena Evans [Deidre Hall], Bo Brady [Peter Reckell] and Hope Williams [Kristian Alfonso], and Steve “Patch” Johnson [Stephen Nichols] and Kayla Brady [Mary Beth Evans]. “Supercouples ae a very big part [of this book],” Meng revealed in the exclusive interview.
Traditions have always been front and center on “Days of Our Lives.” Viewers look forward every year to the hanging of the Christmas ornaments. Of course the ornament tradition was included in the book. Did you know that TPTB were able to create a “Days of Our Lives 50 Years” at the Smithsonian? Four of the original “DAYS” Christmas ornaments were donated for the permanent exhibit. And of course, Meng revealed in the interview.
There are hundreds of photos and memories included in the “Days of Our Lives” 50th Anniversary Tribute. “DAYS” fans can purchase the book online via Amazon or Barnes and Noble or brick and mortar bookstores.
