The Young and the Restless Spoilers: Surprise Decision Proves Ashley Wrong – Madame Mergeron Chooses Devon

Ashley (Eileen Davidson) has a rightful grudge against her mother on ‘The Young and the Restless’. But emotional thinking is currently skewing her thoughts, as is often the case when people push logic away.

The newly formed Hamilton-Winters corporation wanted to make a splash. So Devon (Bryton James) and Neil (Kristoff St. John) made a bold pitch.

They flew to meet with Dina Mergeron (Marla Adams) in Paris, despite the presence of the much-hyped presidential election that was taking place in France. But let’s turn back to the soap world, which has been often known to send hidden political messages through it’s storylines and characters.

Deniers of all stripes might try to claim that the last sentence was false, or that said messages weren’t part of a purposeful political push.

Katherine (Jeanne Cooper) went to school with Dina decades ago. Devon’s honesty proved wise, as he referenced the depth of the relationship he had with his grandmother during his business meeting. That factor, more than figures proved to clinch the deal as Dina relayed to Devon when she called to advise him of her decision. Earlier in the same episode, Ashley told Jack (Peter Bergman) that Dina would hold out for the best deal and wouldn’t sell her company to Devon.

Dina was a product of a provably destructive cultural revolution that was projected, in part through television screens starting in the 1960’s. By the time the ‘Big 80’s’ arrived people like Dina had long been putting their egos above sacrifice. They regularly abandoned, or wronged the families they created with no remorse, or care for the devastating consequences heaped upon their offspring, among others.

Ashley learned many years ago that the person who gave birth to her had an affair she didn’t regret, which meant that John (Jerry Douglas) wasn’t her father. All actual mothers everywhere don’t have to prove perfect to retain their titles of distinction. But some women, like me-first Dina aren’t actually mothers in the true sense.

Redemption is, however, a part of life that all must be open to explore. So it appears as though a setup is being established, whereby Ashley will reconcile with the woman who treated her (and her siblings) like dirt so long ago.

Those who choose to solely focus on what could be a happy ending should never be allowed to pretend as though Dina’s actions didn’t have consequences. As moral relativity makes no actual sense in Genoa City, or anywhere else.
