Faith (Alyvia Alyn Lind) has never met Sharon’s (Sharon Case) father on ‘The Young and the Restless’. That’s because he wasn’t invented until recently. Coincidence wasn’t involved when Faith asked if her mom’s parents had been divorced when she (Sharon) was young. Various bits of dialogue foreshadowing, combined with persistent online chatter that pegs soap opera veteran Walt Willey as Sharon’s father, point to a pending storyline in 2017.
It’s very unusual for Sharon’s pre-Genoa City history to be referenced on Y&R. As longtime devotees of the steamer know, her mother Doris (Karen Hensel), Cassie and Mariah (both played by Camryn Grimes) are the only characters who have ever actually been portrayed on-camera.
Why that purposeful choice was made by various head writers is rather perplexing, yet Case and her alter ego Sharon have endured.
Sharon became Mrs. Newman in the 1990’s. She added various other male’s monikers to her last name through marriage over the years, but her early history has oddly never been explored until now.
Apparently co-executive producer and head writer Sally Sussman believes that it’s time for this legacy character to be written in a different direction.
Moving Sharon from eternal damsel in distress status to reacquainted daughter should create dramatic implications for the character and for her fans. A storyline of this type has the potential to finally allow Case to escape her villainous niche, potentially (or likely) eliciting a stronger overall Sharon character.

Sharon fans have been pleading with Y&R for years to present this character in greater depth. Allowing Sharon to reconnect with her father would represent a huge philosophy shift. After crossing that awaited threshold many storyline directions would then become possible.
It’s hard to know if the case that Dylan (Steve Burton) has been assigned to recently is directly tied to Willey’s new character. In any event, Burton’s voluntary departure from the cast occurred in December. His final scenes will be seen this month. However, his cast member hole may already be filled by the former Jack Montgomery, who is well-known to fans of ABC’s classic ‘All My Children’.
