The Young and the Restless Spoilers: Phyllis' Sense of Humor Sets Her Apart – Gina Tognoni Shines

Gina Tognoni (Phyllis) earned her Daytime Emmy Award through consistently solid efforts on ‘The Young and the Restless’. The Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series winner demonstrated another element within her range this week in a series of solo scenes. There’s always a place for comic relief amidst the drama, as Tognoni showed the audience.

So Miss Summers was preparing a romantic diner for Billy (Jason Thompson). She arrived in the kitchen with loaded grocery bags. While removing each item, Phyllis attached humorous comments about her purchased contents that were smile-worthy.

Phyllis pulled a video recipe to help guide her efforts, as this character has long been known to be undomesticated. The former ‘Red’ initially appeared to be the opposite of her sister, Avery (Jessica Collins). As an aside, Y&R should rehire that solid actor. Collins fit nicely into the cast in the past and her interplay with Tognoni would surely be engaging.

At one point in the baking process Phyllis was tasting chocolate. Her pretty face, which Tognoni often contorts into various comedic positions, was splashed with flour and remnants of other ingredients. Then, just before Phyllis sent a reminder text to Billy, she pulled a nicely completed chocolate souffle from the oven.

Michelle Stafford (Nina, General Hospital) was seen applauding Tognoni after she’d accepted the Emmy last month. That terrific actor created the first version of Phyllis. She was almost always fierce. While the original Phyllis was occasionally placed in comic scenes, Stafford was mostly given cutting remarks to state that were bitingly hilarious.

Tognoni’s edition of Phyllis woke up from a coma (that Stafford’s version had fallen into), made her way back to Genoa City and stopped ‘Shick’s’ long-awaited remarriage. However, the bulk of Phyllis’ subsequent efforts have clearly been written in a much softer direction. Tognoni has since proven to be the right choice to assume this iconic role.

As with many great soap opera personas, depth has allowed multiple looks to be shown to the audience. Stafford’s place will never be forgotten, but Tognoni is also delivering top shelf work.

I am glad to have Gina back on my screen and I think she deserved the Emmy this year, but I am still having a hard time thinking of her as Phyllis. I mostly think of her as a whole new character and that helps.
