Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) is far different today than she was in the 1990’s on ‘The Young and the Restless’. ‘Red’ no more and a good friend to two souls recently. Ravi (Abhi Sinha) is the latest beneficiary, as Phyllis’ fashion tips will help him to project a better image.
Tognoni’s version of Phyllis initially furthered Michelle Stafford’s version of this iconic character. ‘Shick’s’ long-awaited remarriage, years in the offing, was stopped dead by Phyllis’ rise from her coma, hitchhiked trek across the country and entrance into church in that gleaming white dress.
Jack (Peter Bergman) fully reconciled with Phyllis until Marco (also Peter Bergman) appeared. That arc served to end ‘Phack’, while also spotlighting Tognoni’s turn toward vulnerability. It was a smart choice on Y&R’s part, as this particular actor wasn’t cast to mimic Stafford.
When one actor first embodies a role and portrays Phyllis as greatly as Stafford did, and for such a lengthy period of time, something different should be served to the audience. And it has.
The ‘Phack’ divorce resulted from the ‘Philly’ debacle, which is fair to tag as a writing mistake. Phyllis came through the past six months as a more-liked character. That rather remarkable feat earns Tognoni deep praise from this scribe.
In recent months Phyllis has become Lauren’s (Tracey Bregman) trusted friend again. And, as noted earlier, she appears to be taking Ravi under her wing. Would the old Phyllis have done that with no ulterior motive? Enough said.
Ravi is reconsidering whether he and Ashley (Eileen Davidson) can be a couple. Even though Phyllis and Ashley have clashed regularly, Ravi received genuinely good advice from Miss Summers about his pursuit. Plus, Phyllis actually offered a sincere compliment about Miss Abbott. That wasn’t part of the old ‘Red’s’ playbook.
It still may be too soon for Y&R to write Phyllis in a new romantic direction. When that happens, rather than if, it seems more likely than not that she won’t manipulate whatever guy she comes to love. Evolving Phyllis into a good person still feels unusual, but with Tognoni it’s working.
