The Young and the Restless Spoilers: Phyllis and Billy Made It – Couple Defied the Odds

Can every fan honestly say that ‘Philly’ was certain to revive on ‘The Young and the Restless’? This scribe thought the couple was finished as of late last year. But Vickie’s (Amelia Heinle) petulance pushed Billy (Jason Thompson) back into Phyllis’ (Gina Tognoni) arms.

This couple, more than any other (until ‘Glack’) defied the odds by even forming. The idea that Michelle Stafford (who formerly played Phyllis) and Billy Miller (who formerly played Billy) would ever pair was ridiculous. That fact of fictional life made it initially hard for many viewers to even consider the possibility that this ‘Philly’ was plausible.

The rub in daytime asks fans to accept the implausible on a regular basis. Sometimes that implied contract can be forgotten, which is true in this author’s instance. He was looking at Phyllis and Billy through yesterday’s glasses, rather than seeing what the last writing regime and the new one was attempting.

Kudos to the maligned Chuck Pratt, Jr. and his team for having the creative courage to match these characters. That group saw that the potential for long-term chemistry between Tognoni and Thompson.

Congrats to Sally Sussman and her squad as well for allowing ‘Philly’ to revive organically. The reunion between this couple certainly wasn’t rushed and surely is relatable. Many in the audience surely have experienced their own on-again, off-again romances through the years.

Tognoni and Thompson’s combined efforts, along with the depth of the scripts they’re given will soon prove if this couple continues to grow on the remainder of viewers who initially, or still reject the concept.

Yes, outside observers can become invested in their opinions, which then harden over time. That cemented view can be hard to crack. But love, like life, isn’t always explainable.

Now that ‘Philly’ has advanced its relationship, it is worthy to wonder if Phyllis will eventually have Billy’s child? That development is still possible based upon both actor’s ages. If that major plot point plays out this couple will also become more than just a summer fling.
