The signs have been evident for awhile on ‘The Young and the Restless.’ Just like that flirting pair everyone remembers from high school, Nick (Joshua Morrow) and Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) have obviously been moving closer together recently. So it will come as no surprise when they become a couple in 2017. But, that’s not the point of this piece.
Both characters have complex romance histories, similar to many people viewers likely know within their own families or among their circle of friends. Remember, soap operas used to be about real life many years ago. The new regime at Y&R is attempting to write the show back in that direction.

Nick lost Sage (Kelly Sullivan) in the first-half of 2016. Chelsea lost Adam (Justin Hartley) in September. The fact that Adam asked his brother to look out for Chelsea and Connor (Gunner and Ryder Gadbois) shortly before he died, when he thought he’d be spending decades in prison instead of dying, laid the macadam for Supercouple Drive.
As savvy fans know, former head writer and co-executive producer Chuck Pratt, Junior and his team made that storyline decision. Though executive producer Mal Young may have approved of the choice, possibly knowing that Pratt was exploring other career options and could soon be leaving his staff.
New head writer and co-executive producer Sally Sussman has two likeable characters and two solid actors to work with. She can easily follow through with Pratt’s intended direction and allow Nick and Chelsea to continue bonding. Doing so would make sense as of early 2017. Of course this duo, along with any others, can always drift apart or be suddenly split as well.

Chelsea would benefit by having Connor’s uncle in her son’s life. Any trepidations she has about moving on emotionally can also be weighed against Adam’s wishes before he supposedly died. Also, she’s maintaining Adam’s confidence that Christian (Jude and Ozzy McGuigen) is (or is believed to be) his biological child. So, helping to raise him would also help to honor part of her late husband’s legacy.
Mixed feelings clearly exist among audience members about these two characters officially becoming a couple. New Year’s Eve scenes pushed this evolving issue farther than ever before. But again the question is – Will Nick and Chelsea be making a mistake when they form?
