An easy assumption is that Dina (Marla Adams) is evidencing the early effects of Alzheimer’s disease on ‘The Young and the Restless’. Topical storylines were the hallmark of the genre for decades, including the era when Y&R founder Bill Bell reigned. With whatever Dina’s eventual diagnosis is, co-executive producer and head writer Sally Sussman is revisiting a classic soap opera tradition.

Aging issues are deeply relevant in 2017. So Y&R has brought back a character whose longevity allows a point in Abbott history to be revisited, while also offering Adams’ meaty scripts to work from.
There’s clearly something off with Dina’s mental agility. Ashley (Eileen Davidson), Jack (Peter Bergman) and Abby (Melissa Ordway) are now primed to help her face whatever this issue is.

The return of someone who was a side character in the mid-1980’s is an interesting artistic choice. Sussman’s decision has already proven to be wise. She’s touched the past, while also exploring a topic that many in the audience can likely relate to in varied ways.
Y&R has been critiqued by reasonable minds (surely a subjective phrase to be sure) for having created far too many unbelievable arcs in recent years. But all who made those assertions shouldn’t be heard carping that the Dina storyline is boring. If so those individuals would appear to reveal themselves as complainers. Although it’s possible that those people might feel compelled to say something about everything in order to fill social media spaces.
Today’s digital age is attempting to normalize impulse emotions as proof of collective wisdom. Instead, opinion mobs are purely pushing whatever their agenda of the moment is into the public square. Opposing points are often shouted down, rather than discussed. That’s not democratic, it’s debased.
All real soap opera fans, meaning those who value the genre and appreciate the deep talent level that all on-screen and off-screen talent possess, are always able to engage. Social media allows fans to be, or to at least feel more connected to the industry than at any point in history. That’s an intellectual point that all, including the author of this piece, must consider when attempting to assess all Y&R interactors or those who are in Genoa City.
