A power couple is far more than a nickname on ‘The Young and the Restless’. Both actors need to click and their characters must be believable together. For reasons that can be explained and for those that truly can’t, Michael Roark (Travis) seems to be a better on-screen pairing for Amelia Heinle (Vickie than Jason Thompson (Billy) was.
This is not a call to all detractors. Instead, said keyboard believes that Thompson and Roark are both good actors. Erring on the side of chivalry where actors are concerned is always best when critiquing. One doesn’t need to have actually worked in any profession in order to offer, or exclaim, an opinion. But, if one hasn’t actually worked as an actor, other than as an amateur, then overly criticizing those in public who ply that trade seems rather crass.
Thompson agreed to become the fourth Billy Abbott in less than two years. That was no easy task. Thompson’s ‘General Hospital’ fans rightly vouched for his efforts on that classic ABC steamer. So, with soap chops in place, Thompson took over for Burgess Jenkins (adult Billy number 3) in January.

For her part, Heinle worked with Billy Miller, David Tom, Jenkins and Thompson since 2014. A fine actor in her own right, no one should jawbone whatever interplay she’s had with actors 2, 3 and 4. Miller’s work is recognized by many as outstanding. It’s proven very challenging for his successors to reach the high marks he set. But, the same is true for Heinle when her work with Miller is compared to her efforts will all the rest.
Roark’s recent addition to the cast injects an actor who was instantly likeable. His character also enabled Vickie to be paired with a more stable fictional character. Billy’s coupling with Phyllis (Gina Tognoni) has understandably been questioned by longtime Y&R devotees. However, Thompson’s on-screen electricity with Tognoni is simply better than it was with Heinle.

‘Villy’ was great in its heyday. ‘Philly’s’ long-term fate is yet to be determined. As for ‘Tricky’, there’s a lot to like and room to grow. Yes, Roark’s addition was smart. Hopefully, it also enables Thompson’s talents to be better used on the show.
