In a flash he was gone. In an instant he was no more. Morgan Corinthos (Bryan Craig) after stealing Julian Jerome’s (William DeVry) car was caught in a car bomb explosion meant for Julian. In a cruel twist of fate, it appears as though his own father; mob boss Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) is responsible for the bomb being planted in Julian’s car.
How could this have possibly happened? Let’s take a look back at the all too brief life of young Morgan Stone Corinthos and see.
After complications due to a fall down a flight of stairs, as well as being mistakenly shot in the head by her husband Sonny. Carly gave birth to a second son, the first being Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell) who was adopted by Sonny. They named their new son Morgan Stone Corinthos. The name Morgan was a tribute to Sonny’s enforcer and best bud Jason Morgan (Billy Miller). His middle name was a tribute to Stone Cates (Michael Sutton) who was like a little brother to Sonny and had died of AIDS.
As a preteen, Morgan befriends one of Sonny’s new foot soldiers Dominic Pirelli after he saves the young Corinthos from being hit by a car. It is later revealed that Dominic is in reality an undercover cop named Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna), as well as Sonny’s unknown son by Olivia Falconeri (Lisa LoCicero).
Sometime later Sonny ends up standing trial for the murder of Claudia Zaccara (Sarah Joy Brown). Dante using information from Morgan locates a missing Michael and determines that Michael killed Claudia to protect his mother and his new baby sister Josslyn. Shortly thereafter Morgan is sent away to military school.
Morgan returns to Port Charles at age nineteen and involved with Kiki Jerome (Haley Erin). He also had a gambling problem and had changed quite drastically from the quiet and thoughtful child he had been.
Through a series of complications Kiki and Morgan are briefly married, even as Kiki had developed feelings for Michael. After losing Kiki to Michael, Morgan spirals out of control and begins a torrid affair with Kiki’s mom Ava Jerome (Maura West). This affair is eventually discovered and a defiant Morgan moves in with Ava. At this time Julian who is Ava’s brother and sworn enemy of Sonny, begins to blackmail Morgan by threatening Carly. An angry and confused Morgan begins to plot with the Jerome’s against Sonny and accidently shoots Sonny’s bodyguard and his own surrogate uncle Max Giambetti (Derk Cheetwood). Full of remorse and guilt Morgan allows his father to extract him from Julian’s clutches.
After some time Morgan and Kiki find their way back to each other, only to be separated again by Morgan’s resumed affair with her mother, who was pretending to be Ava’s long lost sister Denise.
Morgan’s increasingly erratic behavior leads to the young Corinthos being diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, which he inherited from Sonny. Upon learning of his disorder Kiki finds her way back to Morgan.
After a manic episode, Morgan steals a gun and interrupts a dockside drug sting operation; it leads to Kiki being shot. Morgan is sent away for treatment. In the interim Kiki develops strong feelings for Dillon Quartemaine (Robert Palmer Watkins).
After his release from the treatment facility, Kiki decides to resume her relationship with Morgan. Ava realizing her daughter still has feelings for Dillon plots against Morgan by switching his bi-polar meds with placebo pills. This wreaks havoc with Morgan’s recovery and he displays increasingly erratic and dangerous behavior.
Kiki realizes that Dillon is the one she wants to be with and tells him so. A scheming Ava knowingly sends Morgan to the Quartermaine boathouse where Dillon and Kiki were having their talk. However by the time he arrives he see’s the silhouettes of a couple making love and assumes that it’s Dillon and Kiki. Morgan leaves without realizing that the lovers were Ned Ashton (Wally Kurth) and Olivia.
This leads to Morgan getting drunk and stealing Julian’s car. After being chased down by Jason and exiting the car it explodes. As the helpless Jason watches, the car slides off a cliff and Morgan is lost.
This missive would not be complete without a special shout out to Bryan Craig. His multi layered and deeply moving portrayal of Morgan will be sorely missed. Whether the role is recast or not, Bryan will not be forgotten by anyone who appreciates complex and accomplished acting. Whatever roles this gifted young man finds himself playing, you can be sure he will acquit himself well.
So there you have it. Port Charles will experience a backlash, the likes of which has not been seen since Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson) appeared to have been burned to death when he was a teenager. The domino effect will envelop Port Charles like a wildfire. Allegiances will be tested, some unions irrevocably destroyed. How can Sonny’s marriage to Carly (Laura Wright) survive the apparent death of their youngest child? If indeed Morgan died by Sonny’s hand, will Mrs. Corinthos try to avenge her son’s death by killing his father? Will Ava’s duplicity be discovered? Can Kiki find a way to get over this tragedy and find love with Dillon?
Stay tuned; all of this will make for great soapy theatre in the days and weeks to come.
