‘Dark Shadows’ News: Could ‘DS’ Be Updated and Produced By Streaming Service – Mads Mikkelson, Joseph Morgan or Ian Somerhalder as Barnabas Collins?

There has been much interest in both the original ‘Dark Shadows’ soap opera since it celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2016. Discussions have taken place across social media – on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram – as well as at ‘DS’ fan club gatherings.

Could the original ‘Dark Shadows’ be updated and produced by one of the streaming services? Soap operas air five days per week with very few days off. Would a streaming service be willing to commit that much time and money into the show or would it be released 10 to 20-episodes at a time, leaving six months or more for new episodes.

And who could possibly take on the role of Barnabas Collins? Discussion groups have suggested Mads Mikkelsen [Dr. Hannibal Lecter, ‘Hannibal’], Joseph Morgan [Klaus Mikaelson, ‘The Originals’] or perhaps even Ian Somerhalder [Damon Salvatore, ‘The Vampire Diaries’].

Mads Mikkelson stars opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in the big screen movie ‘Doctor Strange’ and may not have time to commit to 10 to 20-episode series. Joseph Morgan definitely has the darkness needed to portray Barnabas Collins, but he is currently filming season 4 of ‘The Originals.’

Ian Somerhalder has portrayed the Damon Salvatore, the dark and dangerous Salvatore brother, on ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ for 8 seasons. It was announced earlier this year that season 8 would be the final season of TVD. Somerhalder might be available if a revival of ‘Dark Shadows’ were planned.

If one of the streaming services – Netflix, Amazon or Hulu – were to invest in an updated version of ‘Dark Shadows’ what actor could fill the very big shoes of Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins? Though the bigger question remains – is there a big enough fan base to support an updated version of ‘Dark Shadows’?
