“The Young and the Restless” has had an eventful week with Adam Newman’s [Justin Hartley] verdict looming. Tensions have been elevated and people are looking within themselves to see if they may have done anything to cause Delia’s tragic accident two years ago. After almost a decade of the Newman family ridiculing Adam, Victor [Eric Braeden] and Victoria [Amelia Heinle] talk about what it must have been like for Adam living as the Newman that never measured up.
When Adam came to Genoa City, he wanted to be accepted by his family – and yet felt consumed by hatred for his father, Victor. He felt abandoned after learning that his father was a billionaire while he grew up on a farm in Kansas. He felt like his father didn’t care and dismissed him all those years. It didn’t quite happen that way.
His mother, Hope [Signy Coleman] wanted Adam to grow up without the riches the Newman family brought. She loved Victor deeply but wanted her son to grow up the same way she did. She married Cliff, who was an excellent step-father to Adam. He taught him everything he needed to know to be a respectable man.
All those years, Victor longed for a relationship with him. He visited him often and tried to convince Hope to leave the farm behind and to join him in Genoa City. Victor loved Hope very much- so much that he stayed away and allowed another man to father his own child. Victor helped Adam financially when he got into Harvard Business school. He was proud that he graduated with honors. Adam was given every chance to make something of himself, but it always comes down to his deep seeded anger towards his father for leaving him.
Victoria told her dad that it must have been difficult for Adam when he watched her and Nick get ahead while he was the outcast, not only in the family but in the town. They blamed Adam for everything that happened, even if it was not his fault. She recalled a moment a few weeks ago when Nick [Joshua Morrow] and Victor were having a conversation and she overheard her father tell him he hoped one day he’d run the company. She felt jealous and outraged as she was the one who loved Newman Enterprises. She said it occurred to her that at that moment, she felt jealousy and rage for a brief moment, but Adam has lived like that for decades. She felt compassion for him.
Victor also expressed how he feels bad for how Adam has been treated. He told her what happened was a terrible accident. Adam didn’t see her; he’d never go out and hurt a child. “He’s a father, too. He wouldn’t leave poor Delia on the side of the road,” Victor said. For a brief moment, Victor acted like a great father to Adam, standing up and defending his honor. It was definitely the best scene of the show- all month. It seems unlikely that Adam and Victor will ever see to eye, but there is a small glimmer of hope. One thing is for sure, when there is trouble and the Newman needed to stick with each other – they always band together even if they are at odds with each other.
